[1] On leaving the Archer Project turn right then right again heading up towards the front of the cathedral and cross over the road at the tram tracks (take care!). Walk through Fargate turning left to walk down Chapel Walk. At the end turn right and cross over the road, heading into Tudor Square.
[2] With the Crucible Theatre on your left, walk across the square toward the library and head along Surrey Street, down the ramp and out onto Arundel Gate. Cross over the road at the zebra crossing and head down Howard Street, crossing the narrow street beside the Howard Pub. Turn right towards the Showroom bar and cinema and go down the steps towards the main road (Sheaf Street), then go right along the pavement, having past the Showroom on your right. At the next pedestrian crossing lights, cross both parts of the road towards the multi-storey carpark - Qpark.
[3] Go along Suffolk Road, carefully crossing two side roads. On reaching a junction, with a McDonalds on the far side, don't cross any roads but follow the pavement sharply round to the left to go up Shrewsbury Road. After the traffic lights and tram crossing (take care!) find a safe place to cross Shrewsbury Road and go right to the top, with increasingly good views of Sheffield centre to your left. Where the road starts to curve round to the right, there is a triangle of grass on the left with a direction sign to the Cholera Monument, turn right into Norfolk Road.
[4] Shortly after 150 yards, opposite the Shrewsbury alms houses (on your left), turn right through big gates to enter (A) the Cholera Monument grounds and Clay Woods. Walk up to the monument to enjoy views over the city centre, see the Master Cutler's grave and read the information boards. If time allows walk around the small woodland area. Retrace your steps out of the park and left along Norfolk Road. Cross to the right hand side of Norfolk Road and at the junction continue straight on, across the roads, keeping the grassy triangle to your left, towards a cul-de-sac sign. In front of the cul-de-sac sign go over a short rough patch, and turn right down hill onto a cobbled footpath. Half way down the hill turn sharply left towards Sheffield station. Take the steps down to the right. At the bottom of the steps carefully cross the tramlines and enter the station building. Go straight ahead to cross the width of the station and go down the steps at the end to enter the main concourse (toilets, now charged at 20p, and refreshments available here). Carry straight ahead to exit the station towards the wall of water. Go up the footpath beside the wall of water to the pedestrain crossing, and walk up Howard Street, cross over Arundel Gate and head back up to Tudor Square.
(A) The Monument Grounds are the burial ground for most of the victims of the cholera outbreak of 1832, in which over 400 people died. The Cholera Monument was erected in their memory two years later. The pleasure gardens were first laid out around the 1850’s. The Monument was severely damaged during a storm in 1990 and only the bottom half was left intact.
A project partnership combining local business, the voluntary sector and the council raised funding for the restoration of the Cholera Monument and Grounds during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. The majority of the funding came from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
[5] From Tudor Square continue diagonally across and cross over the road and walk along Norfolk Row, where the Tourist Information is situated (but not very well signposted). Turn right into Fargate and head down to the bottom, crossing over at the tram tracks infront of the Cathedral and back to the centre.
