Description

[1] Come out of the centre and turn right along Chatsworth Road, and then almost immediately right into Dunlace Road. At the end of Dunlace Road, cross Glyn Road and head left. After a very short distance turn right into Redwald Road.

[2] Continue along Redwald Road until you reach the junction with Daubeney Road. Cross the end of the Redwald Road and head to the left along Daubeney Road. As you reach the end of the road, you will see a footbridge over the Hackney Cut, which forms part of the River Lee Navigation.

(A) Hackney Cut was dug in 1770 by the River Lee Trustees to improve navigation along the river.

[3] Once across the bridge, turn right along the Cut, walking with the water on your right. There is a seat closeby and another couple of seats further along. Be very careful of cyclists all along here particularly at weekends. There seem to be more cyclists than walkers.

[4] Pass underneath the bridge that carries Homerton Road over the Cut (At this point the riverside path becomes a national cycle route so can be very hazardous at weekends and rush hours. An alternative is to go under the bridge and you should see an open gate to your left indicating paths through some woods. Take the path which runs parallel to the river here and walk along to the double bridge. NB this path would be muddy in wet weather).

[5] Continue until you reach the double bridge of the East Cross Route and Eastway. Head under both bridges and then immediately turn off the waterside path and walk up to the Eastway Bridge.

[6] Cross the road here when it is safe to do so, and turn left, walking up to the lights. , Turn right into Lee Conservancy Road. Pass under the road bridge and then turn left onto a tarmac path running around the edge of a section of the Hackney Marshes (Mabley Green). Follow this path along the bottom edge of the park running parallel to the A12, and then when you reach a path junction turn to the right. There are several seats along this path.

(B) Hackney Marshes was originally marshland that was flooded by the Lee. It was drained in medieval times and used as pasture land for local farmers. Now the marshes are mainly used as recreation land, and hold the world record for the most number of football pitches in one place. The park has 88!

[7] This path will eventually lead you out of the park and onto Marsh Hill. When you reach the road turn left, crossing Mabley Street. Just before you reach the next turning cross Marsh Hill using the zebra crossing. After crossing turn left, and then take the next right along Roding Road.

[8] Follow Roding Road up to the crossroads with Ashenden Road where you turn left. Then turn next right into Glyn Road. Cross and turn left into Clifden Road, and then right along Chatsworth Road to return to the centre.
