Description

[1] Facing the cathedral take the pedestrian walkway down the right hand side of the building to Campo Lane. Turn right along Campo Lane, at the end continue ahead through Hartshead Square and Watson's Walk to come out on Angel Street.

[2] Go straight ahead crossing the road into the pedestrianised King Streety. Watch out for buses when crossing. At the end turn right to the pedestrian crossing, cross over Haymarket and then turn left. Take the first right into Dixon Lane, down the hill. Continue ahead into Broad Street West.

Take the first left between Travelodge and the South Yorkshire Transport Executive building and continue along the pedestrian walkway. On reaching Exchange Street, cross the road towards the signpost to Victoria Quays on the other side of the road, and turn right down towards the ring road. Use the Pedestrian Crossings here to cross to the entrance to Victoria Quays (there is a large stone arch with the name above). Be very careful as this is an extremely busy road.

[3] Enter Victoria Quays and turn left along the canal side with former railway arches on your left. Cross the canal using the bridge before the Quays 1819 cafe. Once over the Sheffield Basin Swing Bridge, turn right back down the other side of the canal.

At Victoria Quays, under the stone archway:

Notice the information board on the wall. There are cafes and sandwich shops here.

Look out for fish in the pool as you cross the Sheffield Basin Swing Bridge (the canal towpath left continues to Meadowhall and Rotherham).

Go right passing the former warehouse buildings - The Straddle (the warehouses are now flats or offices). Leaving the Quays through a wrought iron gateway with stone pillars, turn left, then right crossing the quiet road and go up the ramp to the bridge over Park Square.

[4] After the bridge go up the steps/ramp and bear left and cross the tram track, watching for approaching trams. Turn right and follow along the left hand side of the tracks.

The path will end shortly. Then go through the bollards up South Street along the bottom of Park Hill flats.

These 1960's flats are now a listed building and are undergoing considerable renovation.

Continue to the top of the hill.

The top of the Cholera Monument is visible ahead of you.

[5] Turn right down the steps through the newly created South Street Park amphitheatre. Cross the tram tracks at the back of the train station and enter the station building - go straight on along the bridge, down the steps and out of the front entrance.

Follow the Cutting Edge Sculpture ahead of you up to the road. Cross over here using the crossing and turn left on Paternoster Road/Brown Street towards the Showroom Cinema and the Hubs. Continue along Brown Street, passing the Site Gallery.

(A) The Hubs originally housed the National Centre for Popular Music. Persistence Works, on your left at the end of Brown Street, is is the UK’s first purpose-built studio complex for artists and craftspeople, containing 53 artists studios. Note the mural on the wall of the Rutland Arms by Graffiti Artist Phlegm - his work appears in several locations across Sheffield.

[6] At the end of Brown Street, cross the road, turning right up Furnival Street. Take the second turning right onto Arundel Street, passing the Furnival Galley (on your right) in the Hallam University building, which is open to the public. Cross over where you see the Butcher Works on your left (The Butcher Works has now been converted into a cafe, museum and arts and crafts shops - go through the archway to look around).

Take the second turning on the left and continue straight up to Arundel Gate.  Cross using the pedestrian crossing and turn right past the multi storey car park (known as the cheese grater!).

[7] Take the steps on your left at the side of the Cheese Grater building. Continue on, pass the Winter Garden and then the Peace Gardens on your right. Continue on towards busy Pinstone Street ahead of you .

Cross Pinstone Street and go straight on towards John Lewis car park. Turn right onto Burgess Street. At the end you emerge into Barkers Pool. Visit the small garden (Fountain Precinct) to the right of the City Hall, then cross in front of the City Hall building.

(B) Barkers Pools was known as Balm Green until 1434. It was originally a collecting point for a number of natural springs. Fountain Precinct contains the sculpture 'Horse and Rider' (1978) by David Wynne and 'Cat and Bird' by Vega Bermejo.

[8] Turn right along the side of City Hall (Balm Green). At the back of City Hall, continue straight on along the side of the Reflex Bar to emerge onto West Street.

[9] Turn right along West Street and then right again down a flight of steps into Leopold Square. Cross the square and out the other side (through the archways), cross Leopold Street and turn left along Orchard Street passing the Museum Pub on your right. At the end turn right and continue along the road to the Cathedral – the end of your walk.

(C) The buildings in Leopold Square are the former site of a collection of educational establishments including: School Board Officers, Central Technical School, City Grammar School and Firth College.
