Description

[1] Start outside the First Start Building in Firth Park. Follow the path alongside the fence and Firth Park Road, keeping the playground to your right.

(A) The Map Rock can be found on your left just before the playground.

Continue along this path until a vehicle gateway and Firth Park sign - here exit the park and carefully cross Firth Park Road by the bus stop to the path into Hinde Common Wood. Take the uphill path to the left, signed Hinde Common Wood. Where the path levels, take the steps up to your left and exit through the A-frame onto Firth Park Avenue. Cross the road to another A-frame between Windmill Lane and Hinde House Lane. Follow the path right between hedges then left between boulders. Bear left and continue ahead across the common with the wood in front of you.

[2] As you approach the flats, bear left and leave the common through an A-frame next to the flats.

Note the Giant Foot on the gate (B).

[3] Go straight ahead along Bluebell Road and turn right on Wincobank Road. There is a newsagent / shop here. On the green space across the road you will find the Enchanted Chairs (C)

Retrace your steps onto the Common and take the path to the left - there are great views of the city from here.

[4] As soon as you enter the wood, turn left uphill on the cobbled path. Towards the top the path has shallow steps. At the top of Wincobank Hill, turn left on the cobbled track along the hilltop to emerge onto Jenkin Road. Posh Pillar and her daughters are just to your left (D) Turn back up to the top of Jenkin Road and carefully cross over to the footpath sign on the other side.

[8] Bear to the right down across the grass and then left towards the large disc  - The Star Crossed Queen (E)  Take a bearing from the right-hand stars of Camelopardalis, pass to the left of the clump of trees and bear right towards the dome of Meadowhall.  Descend left down Roman Ridge and on reaching a tarmac path coming from the right, turn left into the woods. Bear right at the 4th metal barrier, turn right towards the fence and follow the path down the steps to come out onto the road. Turn right down Vauxhall Road.  There is a wildflower meadow part way down. At the bottom, just before the main road, turn left to walk through Brendan's Glove Garden (F)

[10] Come out of the garden onto Newman Road. Cross over and turn left up to the church. Go through the church gates and follow the pathway out onto Rock Mount Road. Continue ahead, crossing the road into Merton Road towards 'Graham'. At the end of the road turn right downhill. At the shop on the corner, cross over Standon Road and turn left into Dara Street - walk to the end. Follow the path past the Giant Foot into Woolley Wood, passing the BMX track. On reaching the notice board, turn right to The Lost Gateway (G). Continue ahead downhill (signed TPT - Trans Pennine Trail). After passing under a low tree trunk, turn left and follow the path to some low wooden barriers.

[11] At the barriers turn left then immediately right, going uphill past a bench. You will soon see a parallel path down below. Eventually the path leaves the wood to come out on the Golf Course. Follow the TPT sign pointing left up a grassy track. The track bends right and narrows into a path in the trees. Follow the TPT  straight ahead. Go through the hedge at the end onto a tarmac path. Turn left and follow the hedge around the edge of Concord Park. Turn left at the first junction then keep left alongside the bank to pass the disused bowling greens.

[12] On reaching the playground, turn left towards the A-frame exiting the park at the back of Concord Sports Centre. Follow the pavement to Shiregreen Lane. Turn left  and cross over towards the Steel City Community Club. Follow the driveway down to the end, turn right along the path, down the ginnel and out onto Bellhouse Road. Cross over and enter Bellhouse Road Playing Fields. Take the left path or cut across the middle to the 3 benches. Leave through a gap in the fence in the far left-hand corner and follow the slope down to Sicey Avenue.

The Sun Apple is opposite (H)

Turn left on Sicey Avenue back down to Firth Park Centre.
