Description

[1] Turn left out of Ideas Store, and at traffic lights turn right. On the far side turn immediately left, using a further set of lights to cross road, then turn right to walk along the left hand side of Sidney Street. Cross Adelina Grove and then turn left into Lindley Street. Turn right into Jubilee Street and shortly use zebra crossing. On far side turn right and shortly left into estate footpath.

(A) In Jan 1911 at number 100 Sidney Street a gang of three anarchists, wanted for the murder of three policemen, were cornered by 200 police. Shooting broke out and the anarchists, armed with superior weapons, managed to hit the young Home Secretary Winston Churchill – the bullet passing through his top hat. 800 Scots Guards were called in and the siege eventually ended in a fire in which the anarchists died.

[2] At a path junction keep left and enter the small square. Turn right and then left. Pass playground and at Charles Auffray House fork right to go under Paymal House to leave the estate. Cross the road, turn left and soon right into Wickham Close. At the end enter Stepney Green Park and turn right.

[3] Fork left at junction and follow path round to the left. At crossroads go straight ahead and then at playground fork right to leave park. Turn left at road (Stepney Way). Cross Garden Street and continue past Stepping Stones Farm entrance and follow road round to left.

The 4.2 acre Stepping Stones Farm is free to visit, but is currently (2011) only open to the public at weekends and to school parties by appointment during the week (www.steppingstonesfarm.co.uk ).

[4] Use zebra crossing to cross road and go slightly left to enter St Dunstan’s churchyard. Walk in front of the church and then continue ahead along the tree-lined path.

(B) St Dunstan’s Church is one of the oldest in the East End, with the stone church building dating from the 10th Century. It is known as the ‘Church of the High Seas’, because in the past it was a favoured burial place for many sailors; up until recently, births, marriages and deaths that happened at sea were registered here. The bells are commemorated in the nursery rhyme 'Oranges and Lemons': "When will that be? say the bells of Stepney."

[5] At Whitehorse Road turn left and fork slightly left to go along path into Whitehorse Open Space, past the play centre. At the Egg Sculpture turn left and keep adventure playground on your right. Cross closed road and take right hand path behind church and leave churchyard at Durham Row Gate. Cross main road (Stepney High Street) using zebra crossing and turn right, with farm on left. Follow road round to left. Cross Garden Street by Chapel Arch and enter Stepney Green Park.

(C) Chapel Arch is the remains of a chapel (1831) that was part of a college for Baptist ministers. Most of the college was demolished in 1858, but the chapel remained until 1948.

[6] By a set of semicircular blue seats take the right path alongside the football court. At end of the court fencing turn right to follow the edge of the court, and at a fork near the clock tower go right. Shortly leave the park and turn left to go along Redman’s Road. Cross Jamaica Street, and at a roundabout continue straight on. Pass the school on your left and at a suitable opportunity cross to right hand side.

[7] At a junction with Jubilee Street, go straight on past the ‘No Entry’ signs, and almost immediately turn right along path into O’Leary Square. Go past the shops and use the pedestrian crossing to cross Mile End Road towards the statue of King Edward VII. Use path on right to cross the green and service road. Turn left to go past Mission and Trinity Gardens. Continue straight on at traffic lights, past the Blind Beggar Pub. Shortly you will arrive back at the Ideas Store.
