[1] From Attercliffe Tram stop turn left along Shortridge Street for a short distance to find a path on your left. Follow the path to cross over the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal on a bridge and take the path leading down to the canal. Turn right and walk along the towpath. (Beware, path shared with cyclists)
(A)The Sheffield and Tinsley Canal is four miles long and links Victoria Quays in the city centre with the River Don in Tinsley. It opened in 1814 and was built wide enough to accommodate large sailboats called Yorkshire keels, which transported cargoes from Sheffield to the sea via the Trent and Humber.
[2] Branch right as you approach the black and white foot bridge and cross it. Go down the steps and cross the bridge over the railway. You can cut short the walk here by turning left to pick up the route at waypoint 4. Turn right and walk down to the Supertram stop. Pass through the gate into Don Valley Bowl and turn right up the hill.
(B)The purpose-built grass bowl hosts outdoor events during the summer. There are seats at the summit if you need a breather, and if you have the energy, a spiral staircase takes you up inside the old furnace to a viewing platform.
[3] Leaving the summit take a left and walk back down towards the Supertram stop, turn right out of the gate and follow the path to the right that spirals up towards the footbridge. Cross the footbridge.
[4] Stay on this path all the way past Don Valley Stadium, home to Rotherham United Football Club and Sheffield Eagles Rugby Club. Cross Worksop Road (Take care crossing) and go straight on up Chippingham Street. Cross Shirland Lane at the traffic lights and turn right. Turn left into Shortridge Street to return to Attercliffe Tram stop.
