[1] With the council offices behind you, turn left along Carbrook Hall Road, to the end and cross over Weedon Street before turning left into it.
[2] Walk along Weedon Street, cross Meadowhall Drive and continue. After passing the Meadowhall overspill car park, and as Weedon Road starts to bend left, turn right down a signposted path (TPT to Meadowhall - this is the Transpenine trail).
[3] As the path forks, take the left hand path down an underpass (under Meadowhall Way) next to the river. Follow the path next to the river Don on your left with the Meadowhall centre to your right. You come to the entrance to the Oasis area (A).
(A) Here there are toilet and refreshment facilities.
[4] From the Oasis, the path slopes down by the river under two road bridges until you come to a multiple signpost signed as stated to Rotherham. Cross the access road to the Meadowhall coach park using the light controlled crossing and carry straight on.
[5] At the signpost to the canal (Rotherham and Tinsley) turn left to cross the tram tracks in front of the ‘Meadowhall South/Tinsley’ tramstop. Go up over the bridge to the canal towpath. Turn right along the towpath, signed ‘Sheffield Central’.
[6] Walk along the towpath, past the Tinsley Locks complex. This is a long flight of locks and you will be heading to lock 8. Also a cut through for cyclists so look out for bikes. At the high bridge over the canal continue straight on and continue to follow the towpath along the right hand bank.
(B) By lock No. 5 there is a plaque in a stone plinth recording the damage done by enemy action in air raids on the city during the Second World War. The plaque also acknowledges the local efforts which went into keeping the canal open regardless.
After about ¼ mile you will come to some huge wooden sleepers and ruined iron fittings on the canal (this is a derelict canal dock). There are some colourful barges in the basin beyond. Turn right here along an unsignposted path between the trees, through some birch scrub woodland. This path comes to an unkempt concrete path. Take the left fork of this path up a slight rise to run parallel to the towpath. At the end of this path you will come to the bridge on Greenland Road/Broughton Lane. Turn right down the main road towards Centretainment.
[7] Using the central refuge and low access points, cross the access road to Centretainment. Soon after, take the cycle path to the left through Centretainment (TPT sign). Follow the path to the left of Cineworld. Turn left at the gated control booth to head towards 'Toys R Us' in front of you to your right.
[8] At the Attercliffe Common road, turn right onto the central refuge of the Retail park access road, then use the lights to cross the dual carriageway. Once across Attercliffe Common, take the cycle path immediately in front of you, alongside the Carbrook Hall pub. At the end of this short path, turn right into Carbrook Hall Road and continue ahead to return to the council offices.
