Route Developer: Terry Howard
[1] Cross over Woodbourn Road and the tram tracks by the traffic lights to enter Worthing Road opposite. There is an open space to the right of the road and it is possible to walk on this providing you rejoin Worthing Road lower down. Alternatively, you can remain on the pavement on the left hand side of the road and cross to the right hand side when you reach the Woodbourne Hotel.
[2] At the Woodbourne Hotel turn right into Bacon Lane, opposite and cross Bacon Lane Bridge (take care – the bridge is narrow and there is no footpath). At the end of the road cross over Effingham Road ahead to enter Stoke Street opposite.
[3] Follow Stoke Street on its left hand pavement for a short distance, then take the path on the left which overlooks the River Don. When the path meets Attercliffe Road, turn left over Washford Bridge. Once across the bridge, take the access path immediately on your left (through the arch) down to the Five Weirs Walk.
[4] Continue ahead along the path, passing the large wood carving of a salmon (this area is known as Salmon Pastures). As you go down this section, it is possible to take a slight diversion to the right into a wildlife area. Make sure you re-join the main riverside path. The path then leaves the river soon after Niagara Weir and exits onto Warren Street.
[5] Turn left along the road to the traffic lights, then cross over Leveson Street and pass under the railway arch continuing along the riverside path of the Five Weirs Walk. Cross the steel Bailey Bridge, to exit left onto Effingham Street.
[6] Cross over the road, passing in front of Waverley House on the corner, and and turn left along Effingham Road, under the railway bridge and on towards the traffic island.
[7] Cross over Effingham Road before the traffic island, and at the junction turn right up Bernard Road. Cross this road and take the first left onto Lumley Street (may be unsigned). Enter Lumley Street and after about 100 metres look out for some steps to the left down to the canal towpath (Take care: some steps are missing). Turn right along the canal path and continue, passing under Bacon Lane Bridge, (near Waypoint 2), then under a further seven bridges (note: the three next to the last one are very close together and look like one).
[8] As you emerge from the last bridge (which carries a railway), continue along the canal a short distance but look out for a path coming down from the right over an open space.
[9] Take this path up and continue straight on over the open space until it meets some wrought iron gates onto Shirland Lane. At the road turn right, passing over two bridges to finally cross the canal where you will meet the tram tracks at the traffic lights.
[10] Without crossing the tram tracks, turn left and head for the tram stop. Continue past the tram stop and along the path to take a bridge on your left. This takes you back over the canal and emerges near the corner of Roundell Street and Palmer Street. Turn right along the back of the power tool superstore and down onto Staniforth Road.
[11] Cross at the traffic lights. Turn right then immediately left into Woodbourn Road, crossing the tram tracks, and follow the tram tracks back to the centre.
