Description

Starting Point: St Wilfrid’s Centre, 524 Queens Road, Sheffield City Council S2 4DT

[1] Come out of the centre and turn to cross Queens Road. After crossing continue straight ahead along Myrtle Road. Cross the railway bridge, and then immediately afterwards turn right into Prospect Road. After a short distance cross and head along Alexandra Road.

[2] This will bring you into Heeley City Farm. Walk through the farm to come out onto Anns Road. Cross Anns Road and walk ahead into Richards Road. When Richards Road merges with Spencer Road, cross to the right hand pavement to walk alongside a wide grassy area.

[3] Soon you will see a footpath off to the right which heads into a cul-de-sac (Sturge Croft). Follow the road until it reaches the wider Gleadless Road. Turn left along Gleadless Road, and then first right into Kent Road. Walk along Kent Road for some distance. After crossing the junction with Albert Road, look for a footpath off to your right.

[4] Follow this path until it comes out onto Brooklyn Place. Turn left at the end onto Brooklyn Road. At the busy junction cross carefully to continue ahead along Brooklyn Road. Cross Meersbrook Park Road and then head straight ahead through the arch into (A) Meersbrook Park.

[5] Follow the path straight ahead, and at the first fork keep right passing a sports pitch on your right. At the next crossroads turn right, heading for the corner of the park. After a short distance you will come to a park exit onto Brook Road. Turn right here, and then cross Brook Road to walk along Meersbrook Park Road.

[6] Caution! London Rd is a busy main road. Turn right along London Rd past a variety of shops, restaurants and a Police Station. Cross the side street – Valley Rd, to continue on along London Rd to the Crown Inn on a corner and turn right into Albert Road. Walk a short distance along Albert Rd, until you are opposite a small grassy area, with a path leading up through it. Cross Albert Rd here, then turn round to look at the large archway in a brick building which you have just passed.

[7] With Albert Rd behind you continue up the path, through the gardens, to a circular seated area. To your right above the gardens, there is a large church building. At this junction of paths, turn left and then immediately take the right hand fork to the road. Cross straight across Thirlwell Rd to another path through an open piece of land. The path has laurel bushes to the right and trees to the left. The path curves round to the right to join Godwin Rd, where you turn left. Here you need to cross over Godwin Rd to continue along, as the foothpath disappears on the right. Cross the side street Artisan Road and continue along Godwin Rd, which now becomes Well Road. You can now see the old school building directly ahead.

[8] When you come to Tillotson Rise, cross Well Road and take the footpath slightly to the right to the Heeley Boulder. The boulder is designed for rock climbing and is suitable for children and adults. Go past the boulder and follow the footpath across a road. There is an adventure playground above you to the right. Follow the path to the Sheaf View public house.

[9] Take the alleyway in between the Sheaf View public house and Peter Ward Engineering. This alleyway is called Cutler’s Walk and it leads past Sheaf Bank Business Park to the River Sheaf. Walk alongside the River Sheaf where herons and dippers can often be seen. Cross the river bridge and go through the railway tunnel.
Turn right in the retail park and turn left before Halfords. Turn right at the main road (Queen’s Road) keeping Halfords on your right.

When you come to the junction with Myrtle Road, cross and then cross Queen’s Road (take care as both roads are very busy) to return to the centre.
