Description

[1] If there is time and if it is open, a visit to the St Luke’s Community Garden would be worthwhile.  The garden is situated at the side of the Church Hall, adjacent to the Church. From the front door of St Luke’s Church, turn right and with your back to the large traffic roundabout, walk along the pavement of Brownley Road, on the same side as the Church.

[2]  At the first corner turn right into Stancliffe Road and continue along the same side to cross first the junction with Briar Crescent followed by Rotherby Road.  There may be cars parked on the wide pavements on both sides of the Rotherby Road junction, so care is needed

[3] Continue along Stancliffe Road until, where the road bends to the left, look for the entrance to Hollyhedge Park (A).   A large sign ahead – Hollyhedge Park – indicates the car park entrance, but just before this, go through a black gate in a gap in the hedge on the right into the park.

Walk along the tarmac path to the right of the car park and at the far end bear left and then right to pass a derelict building on the left. (There is a netball court to the right with a Skateboarding area beyond).

[4] Continue ahead along the tarmac path and at the T-Junction turn right. On the left are football pitches and along the path ahead are benches where you can sit and watch the aircraft on their final descent into Manchester Airport. A little further ahead, on a grassy slope to the right, there are picnic tables and benches. Soon the children’s play area is reached.

[5] Leaving the children’s play area at the top right hand corner, go through the black gate just past the corner of the bowls club-house,to leave Hollyhedge Park and turn right onto Hollyhedge Road. Walk along Hollyhedge Road with the park on your right. Make sure children are kept away from the kerb – this is a very busy road.

Cross the junction with Covert Road and continue ahead passing Mitchell Gardens, a rather attractive residential development for the elderly. Then cross the junction with Rotherby Road, the far end of which was crossed earlier.

[6] Soon the tower block of flats called Hollyhedge Court is reached adjacent to a large traffic roundabout.  Bear right into Brownley Road and head back towards St Luke’s Church where the walk started.
