Description

1 Head south down Church Chare past Park View school and turn left (at sign to Riverside Park) down Roman Avenue to cross the A167 by the footbridge.

2 Walk down to the River Wear past the play ground and turn right onto the riverside track.

3 Walk under New Lumley Bridge and follow the riverside track for nearly 2 miles. Note the nature reserve on your right with several points of access.

4 The track ends with a right turn into the housing estate. Follow this and turn left down Crichton Avenue. About halfway along turn right at a public footpath sign to come to a crossing on the A167. Take the crossing with care and turn right then left along Lancaster Terrace.

5 At the end of the Terrace turn left up Ropery Lane, cross at the crossing opposite St Cuthbert's RC Church and continue up Ropery Lane to turn right at the next crossing (Ashfield Terrace).

6 Follow the pavement along Mains Park Road and Church Chare back to the starting point.
