Description

This inner city walk has a number of busy roads, please take care when crossing these and use pedestrian crossings where possible

[1]  From the start turn left along Cossington Street.

[2] Turn to your right and cross straight over Melton Road and then Loughborourgh Road at the pedestrian crossings, turn right along Loughborough Road and continue forward, passing the Abbey Street Primary Community School fields on the left.

[3]  After approximately 300m turn left down Holden street and continue forward

[4]  Just before the left hand bend turn right onto the footpath just in front of TS Tiger. Continue straight on this path and you will eventually see the canal on your left.  

(A)  TS (Training Ship) Tiger is the headquarters of the Leicester sea cadet unit.  It was founded in 1937 and is a charitable organisations that has helped thousands of youngsters learn about leadership, land and sea skills.  They meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and are always keen to accept new recruits and volunteer helpers.

[5] Keep to the left with the canal on the left

[6] Continue past Belgrave Avenue and as the road bends to the right, keep left and take the path straight ahead.

[7] In a short distance, just past the green space, take the next path on the right into the gardens, continue round with the gardens on the left

(B)  You are now entering the Belgrave Hall and Belgrave Gardens Conservation Areas.  The Hall was completed in 1709 and is a Grade II listed building. The gardens are a site of special historical interest and were created at about the same time.  It is rumoured that ghostly apparitions have been seen in the Hall

[8]  Exit through the iron gates, just after the building, and turn left onto Church Road

[9]  At the end of Church Road turn right onto Thurcaston Road

(C)  On the opposite side of  the road, at the crossroads is the former Belgrave School, now in use as offices., and built in Mountsorrel granite.   Note the Jubilee Clock dated 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.

[10] Turn right onto Loughborough Road and cross over the road at the pedestrian crossing.  Continue forward.

[11]  Turn left onto Windsor Road, cross over and continue to the end

[12]  Turn right onto Melton Road and cross over at the pedestrian crossing.  Continue forward along bustling Melton Road

This is very busy with shoppers and pedestrians.   Take care when passing oncoming pedestrians

[13]  Turn left into Cossington Street to return to the start
