[1] Start from outside the Wheel Inn. With your back to the front door of the pub turn left along Melton Road. Cross over Brook Street and keep walking down the pavement for 400m until you leave the village.
[2] Cross over Brookside which joins from the left, and immediately at that junction, on the far side of Brookside, there is a gap in the hedge on the left. Go through this gap and take the footpath through the field to the yellow post in the far hedge.
[3] The yellow post marks a gap in the hedge. Go through the gap onto the road and turn right. Walk up the pavement and then take the track to the right at the footpath sign "Brooksby 1 1/2 miles" which appears to be a private drive to Greenacres. Go between the brick pillars and walk up the drive past several houses.
[4] At the end of the private drive continue straight on along the footpath to the right of the last house. Walk along the edge of the first field keeping the hedge on your right, then cross the middle of the next field. Continue in the same direction when the path becomes a stone track and pass under the overhead power lines. Follow the stone track round to the right and then turn left onto a tarmac roadway which leads down to the buildings of Hall Farm on the left.
[5] At the crossroads, with the farmhouse on the left, go straight on and follow the roadway as it curves left. Caution: This roadway carries college traffic and has no verge. Look out for traffic! Follow the roadway for one field until the roadway turns left down to the fishing lake. Go straight on through kissing gate and cross parkland to yellow post ahead. Go through another kissing gate and cross to corner of hedge where there is a yellow post, then continue to left hand corner of field where there is another gate leading into the college grounds. Continue in same direction over the grass of college grounds onto the tarmac roadway, and follow this roadway in a straight line between the college buildings to the road.
Brooksby Melton College is a further education college based in Melton Mowbray. The college has three campuses: two in Melton Mowbray itself and this one in the village of Brooksby. This one specialises in animal care.
[6] When you reach the road turn left and walk along the verge for 75m past the white bungalow named Brooksby Lodge on the left. Before the road bends to the left cross the road to a footpath sign on the right. Caution: This is a blind corner. Look out for traffic! Go over the stile and cross the field heading for the tower of Rotherby church in the trees. As you climb up the field a cattle grid appears on the road on your right. Cross over the cattle grid and follow Main Street all the way through the village of Rotherby.
[7] After passing through Rotherby, just past the last house in the village on the left, take the track to the left by some old cattle pens. Walk down to the gate in the first hedge with a large shed on the right, go through the gate and immediately turn left down the hedge. Ignore footpaths to the right. You are now on the Leicestershire Round. Walk down the field with the hedge on your left and cross the railway through the kissing gates. Caution: This is an unmanned crossing. Take great care crossing the railway. Follow yellow arrow across small grass field to bridge over dyke, then cross next larger field heading for yellow post in trees at far side of field. Cross over the River Wreake on the footbridge, follow path to left through small gate, then cross small brick footbridge and walk down edge of small wood to kissing gate into meadow. Cross meadow slightly right, away from river, heading for Hoby church.
[8] Go over the stile with a small concrete footbridge, and follow the narrow path up the hill between two hedges. When you reach the cottages turn left along a track. Ignore the immediate right turn that leads between the cottages, and continue on the track with the line of cottages on your right. Follow the track round to the right and continue up the hill to the road opposite Hoby church. Turn left along Main Street and walk down the pavement to the first corner where the main road turns right. Turn left down Brooksby Road. Caution. No pavement! Past the houses take the footpath on the left through a kissing gate, and take the right hand footpath staying close to the road. The path soon rejoins the road at a kissing gate.
[9] Cross the road and go through another kissing gate with footpath sign "Rearsby 2 miles", and walk between football pitch and playground. Go through another kissing gate, then go slightly left and cross a concrete farm bridge. Walk up the hill up the center of this field heading for the top left corner of the field. Go through the small gate in the left hand hedge near the top of the field. This gate will only become visible when you are close to it. Go through another gate then follow the path with wire fence on your left under power lines to another pair of small gates with wooden footbridge over dry dyke. Cross the next field to kissing gate and cross the tarmac road.
[10] Walk up the tarmac drive to Lodge Farm and take the grassy track round to the right of the farm buildings. Continue on the grassy track with a plantation of Christmas trees on your left and go through the kissing gate at the end of the plantation. Continue on the path parallel to the river you can see away to your left, and ignore the footpath off to the left which goes to an old brick bridge. Keep the hedge on your right until you reach a large field with the path crossing through the middle. Cross this field and the next field to a small gate with a pylon on your right. Continue to the yellow post ahead where the path reach a stone track.
[11] Turn left on the stone track and walk towards the river. As you approach the old mill buildings follow the yellow arrows past the reconstruction and continue to the river which you cross on a rebuilt brick footbridge. Bear right after the brick footbridge, follow the footpath through the wood alongside the river and emerge into a field.
[12] Turn left at the yellow post, go through small gate and walk up the field with the hedge on your right. Halfway to the railway take the small gate in the hedge on the right. Go through the gate and cross the field slightly left to a yellow post in the opposite hedge where there is a small gate. Go through the gate and cross the corner of the field to the railway crossing. Caution: This is an unmanned crossing. Take great care crossing the railway. Go through the kissing gate and immediately over a stile then bear right diagonally across the field to a yellow post on the far side that marks a gap between the houses that leads to the residential road. Go through kissing gate and down narrow alley between two houses and turn right along the residential road.
[13] Walk down the pavement of Wreake Drive to Station Road. Cross over Station Road and turn left, then immediately take footpath with the railings that climbs a slope above the road. Go through kissing gate with sign "Rearsby 1/4 mile", and follow tarmac path across grassed area to kissing gate which leads to narrow tarmac path between two hedges. Turn right when you reach residential road and head for the church. At the end of the cul-de-sac follow Leicestershire Round sign to the left.
[14] Walk on the path round the churchyard, keeping the church on your right, until you reach the church gates then turn left. Walk past the cottages down to the ford and cross the stream on the footbridge. At this point you leave the Leicestershire Round. Turn left along Brookside for a few yards then take the footpath on the right with sign to "Melton Road". When you reach Melton Road turn right and you will see the Wheel Inn ahead.
