Description

[1] Start from outside Wythenshawe Park Hall. Turn north, with Oliver Cromwell on your right and the Hall on your left, and walk to the park exit. When you come out of the park, cross over Wythenshawe Road.

People with wheelchairs and pushchairs should go straight on, along Rackhouse Road, cross Sale Road and continue to reach Yew Tree Lane. Turn right along Yew Tree Lane, left along Willenhall Road and then go under the motorway to rejoin the main route.

The main route turns right. Walk along Wythenshawe Road to meet Sale Road. Cross over Sale Road and continue towards the motorway. At the end of the buildings, turn left along a footpath which runs alongside the houses and the motorway. Walk past the steps which lead up to the bridge over the motorway and follow the road round to the left to Willenhall Road to meet the walkers with wheelchairs and pushchairs. Turn right on Willenhall Road and pass under the motorway.

[2] Go through the gates straight ahead along Riverside Avenue (may be tricky for wheelchairs) and follow the tarmac track which leads to a bridge over the River Mersey. Cross the Mersey, go through the gate and turn left along the river bank. Carry on along the footpath beside the river till you get to the small iron bridge that goes across to Jackson’s Boat Pub on the other side of the river.

[3] Do not cross the river but take the gravel path that goes sharp right across the meadows, ignoring the tarmac path off at right angles to the river. This gravel path eventually becomes tarmac. At the far side of the meadows, with a disused sports hall on your right, come out through the gate (may be tricky for wheelchairs) and turn left along Hardy Lane. Continue until it reaches Barlow Moor Road.

Turn left along Barlow Moor Road and cross over at the lights, opposite Chorlton Park School. Then turn left and walk alongside the park until you come to a gate. Go into the park through this gate and head diagonally left across the grass to the exit near the allotments. Look out for a carved owl. Wheelchair users and pushchairs may prefer to turn left and follow the path round to the exit.

[4] Go out through this exit into Beechwood Avenue. When you reach Sandy Lane, cross the road and turn left until you come to Dawlish Road. Turn right into Dawlish Road and continue to the end. Cross over Corkland Road and continue along Sudbury Road to the small alley way which marks the entrance to the Metro and Fallow Field Loop Line.

Go down to the Metro station, cross the track and turn right onto the Fallow Field Loop line. This is a shared route with bikes so watch out for cyclists. Keep walking along this path for about three quarters of an hour until you reach the exit for Yew Tree Road.

[5] Take this exit and turn right as you come out of the Fallow Field Loop, left into Avian Drive and then right into Bethnall Drive. At the end, turn left along Yew Tree Road. When you reach the main Wilbraham Road, use the lights to first cross over Yew Tree Lane and then over Wilbraham Road to reach the diagonally opposite corner. There you will see a gap in a wall. Go through this gap and follow the path round to the left into Platt Brook Close. Walk up to Hart Road. Cross Hart Road and turn left to the entrance to Platt Fields Park.

Enter Platt Fields Park and take the path off to the right. Follow it round the little mound (it is too small to be a hill and go past the fruit trees on the right. Take a path off to your left which leads to the lake. Walk up to the lake and follow the path right round the lake till you come to the Lakeside Centre.

When you leave the Lakeside Centre, continue on to the top of the lake, then turn right and very soon sharp left. You will see a tree lined path leading to the edge of the park with the old training ground for Manchester City FC on your left. Follow this path out of the park onto Platt Lane. Turn left, cross over and then turn right to go up Heald Place. Follow this very long, straight road until it ends on Moss Lane East opposite a gate into Whitworth Park.

[6] Cross over Moss Lane East, enter Whitworth Park and head towards the Whitworth Art Gallery. Leave the park near the Gallery, opposite the hospital, and turn left to go along Oxford Road. Stay on the left hand side and walk past Manchester University, the Medical School, the Museum and the Royal Northern College of Music. Continue along Oxford Road under the motorway past Manchester Metropolitan University until you see the BBC building on your right. Cross over Oxford Road at the traffic lights and turn right down Charles Street, alongside the BBC. Cross over Princess Street at the lights and continue ahead, past a multi-storey car park to Sackville Street. Cross over and turn left along Sackville Street and under the railway bridge. Take the first right along Granby Row, in front of the university buildings, and walk past the Vimot Sculpture and the iron knot sculpture. At the end of the university building turn left into Cobourg Street. Cross Fairfield Street, Whitworth Street and Aytoun Street at the lights. Walk right along Aytoun Street then first left into Minshull Street. Follow Minshull Street over the canal to Portland Street and then turn right to cross over the main road and walk into Piccadilly Gardens.

[7] The walk finishes in Piccadilly Gardens.
