Description

[1] Upon leaving Fosse Community Centre, turn left along Mantle Road. Cross over the junction with Battenberg Road, continuing straight on.

[2] At the next junction with Paget Road, turn left and continue on to the T junction with Tudor Road. You will see the entrance to Rally Park directly opposite.

[3] Cross over Tudor Road and enter Rally Park, heading straight on along the made path and continue past the playground on the left.

Tudor Road is heavily parked, so take care checking for traffic when crossing this street.

[4] After a short distance bear right onto to the path at the edge of the park, signposted Castle Park.

[5] At the river bridge continue forward to join the path alongside the River Soar.

Beware of cyclists in the park and on the towpath as warning may not be given of their approach.

[6] Continue under the West Bridge and St Augustine Road bridges.

Take care under the bridges as there is limited headroom.

[7] Shortly after the bridges turn right up the slope to the footbridge over the river.

[8] Cross over the bridge into Castle Park, turn right on the path and bear right past the maypole.

(A) This area is a scheduled monument encompassing the Castle Hall and the Magazine Gateway among others.  Leicester Castle was built in 1060 and little remains of the original structure.  Castle Park was opened in 1926 and the  4 acre site has a rock garden, mixed borders, two small ponds and a  waterfall.

[9] Just before the exit in front of the Soar Point  turn sharp left onto the path and continue round the other side of the maypole to rejoin the path back to the footbridge.

[10] Just past the footbridge turn right to pass through the Castle Garden Ponds, just after the top of the steps take the next path on the left and continue to the exit on St Augustine Road passing the statue of Richard III, which commemorates his death at the Battle of Bosworth, on the right.

[11] Cross King Richards Road and St Augustine Road at the traffic lights.

[12] Turn left along St Augustine Road and continue forward, crossing Richard III Road.

Take care over Richard III Road as there is no pedestrian crossing.

(B) Just before the bridge over the old River Soar is a plaque commemorating King Richard III and the myth that his remains were thrown into the river at this point.  There is currently a project under way to excavate a car park in the city looking for the King's remains.

[13] After a short distance turn right into Tudor Road and almost immediately turn right into Rally Park.

[14] Keep left, along Queen Elizabeth Way passing the signal and track on the right , through the park with the houses on Tudor Road to the left.

(C) Site of West Bridge station.  This original signal standing beside a piece of track is left as a reminder of the Park’s historic past and recalls the days of steam when Leicester was amongst the first to utilise the new mode of transport. The line opened in 1832 and carried coal from the Leicestershire coalfield and granite from the Groby quarries.  Passenger trains serving Glenfield , Kirby Muxloe and Ratby ceased in 1928 and the line finally closed in 1966.

[15] Continue to the exit on Paget Road and retrace the outbound route back to the Centre.
