Getting there

Auden Way is off West Way, which runs between Newport Road (A518) and Rising Brook (A449). Parking is available on Auden Way. Drive along West Way until reaching the Westway Pub. Take Shakespeare Road opposite, then turn left and left again.

The Centre is served by bus route 9 from Gaol Street in Stafford town centre, 4 times per hour on weekdays and Saturdays and hourly on Sundays. Get off at Dryden Close, and the centre is 100 metres ahead of you on the right.

Description

[1]  Turn right on leaving the Centre and walk to the top of Auden Way. This is Wordsworth Avenue.

[2]  Turn right onto Wordsworth Avenue and proceed along the road, crossing Shakespeare Road.

[3]  Where Wordsworth Avenue curves left, turn right into Masefield Drive.

[4]  At the end of Masefield Drive cross the road and turn left onto West Way.

If you turn right here, you can follow the alternative shorter route back along West Way to return to the Signpost Centre.

[5]  Cross Vaughan Way, then at the traffic lights on Newport Road cross Westway and proceed along the main road until you see a milestone on your right.

Be careful crossing at the traffic lights, There are no pedestrian lights and traffic can turn at high speed from your left even with the lights on red.

[6]  Shortly (10 metres) after this milestone, you will see a wide tarmacked public footpath with a fingerpost. Turn into this footpath and follow it until you cross the driveway of King Edward VI School.

[7]  Shortly (10 metres) after this driveway, take the footpath to your right, across grass.

At the end of the footpath there is a set of railings which may be difficult for wheelchair users to get past. An alternative route is to turn right up the school driveway (Dryden Close) and then turn left onto West Way.

[8]  At the end of the footpath, turn left and follow West Way to the Pelican crossing and cross the road. Continue left along West Way passing the Graffiti wall (B) on your right.

As you cross you will see the Signpost Centre ahead of you. You may, if you wish finish the walk here.

[9]  Turn first right into Coleridge Drive.

[10]  Turn first right into Wordsworth Avenue.

[11]  Turn first right into Auden Way and retrace your steps to the Signpost Centre.

POI information

(A)  Stafford Signpost Centre, Highfields

Located at the heart of the local community, the Signpost Centre was established in 2007 and soon became a social hub for the local community.

The centre provides a vibrant and welcoming place to meet, chat and enjoy a quiet cuppa as well as offering access to the internet and advice on housing, financial and family services.

A recent addition to the centre has been the creation of a sensory garden in what was an overgrown and apparently useless plot of land beside the building. A quiet haven for all the community to enjoy, this small plot shows what can be achieved when people work together.

(B)  The graffiti wall was created by the local community and features comic book characters from the last eight decades.
