[1] Coming out of the Community Centre gates, turn right onto Solway Road North. Walk past the houses and bungalows, looking at the different front gardens, until you get to the children's play area.
[2] Turn left and walk into the small alleyway. As you pass through the small grass area, notice the Rowan and Silver Birch trees. Continue along the alley ahead of you.
A. The rowan tree takes its name from the old Norse word for tree "Ruan" It has bright red berries and its leaves turn red in autumn. The silver birch has white bark and its wood is used to make jumps for racehorses.
[3] At the end of the alley you reach a road, just by no.38. This is Trent Road. Turn right. Although some of these gardens are overgrown, some are cared for. Look out for conifers, lavender and pampas grass. Follow the road round the bend to the right until you come to the junction with Solway Road South.
B. Lavender is used for perfume as well as cooking and medical uses.
[4] Cross Solway Road South carefully and turn left. Most of the gardens here as used to park cars, but there are some interesting ones. Just before the junction with Alder Crescent there is a lime tree in the pavement.
C. English lime trees are not citrus but “Tilia” trees. They have small clusters of flowers that turn to groups of winged seeds. The wood does not warp and is used for piano keys and sound boards.
[5] Turn right into Alder Crescent. This road seems not to have any alder trees and is not a crescent. The houses are bigger here, but not many have gardens. There are some hawthorn trees in the pavement and, I think, a small monkey puzzle tree in one garden. Carry on until you come to a pathway between numbers 86 and 88.
D. Hawthorn trees have dark red berries that can be used to make jelly. Monkey puzzle trees can grow to 40 metres with a 2 metre diameter trunk. I hope I am wrong!
[6] Turn right into the pathway, walking between the red and white posts. Cross the Alder Crescent open space back to the Saints Community Centre ahead of you. The grass here is quite smooth, but there are no paths.
