Accrington: Platts Lodge and Hyndburn Greenway

By car.  There is a car park at the rear of the Pals Centre and also across the street at The New Era Centre.

By Bus.  There is a bus stop on Paradise Street, or walk from the bus station up Church Street to the mini roundabout  and then turn right onto Paradise Street.

By Train.  The station is next to the Tesco Superstore almost opposite Paradise Street.

[1] From the Paradise Street entrance go right and follow the road round to Church Street and up to the start of Wellington Street.

[2] Turn right and walk up Cotton Street to its junction with Royds Street (on the left); turn right.

[3] Follow the path to the left round the back of the houses and take the right hand path onto Platts Lodge.

[4] Turn right and follow the path across a small bridge and on past the red columns (A), which used to carry the railway over the lodge, until you reach Ormerod Street.

[5] Carefully cross Ormerod Street and walk along Scaitlcliffe Street passing the Globe Centre (B).

[6] Take the second left and go up Richmond street and then take the second right on to Brown Street.

[7] Follow the road to the end and carefully cross the road and continue straight ahead into Corporation street.

[8] take the first right onto Crosslands Street and at the end turn right onto Hyndburn Greenway. Continue on this path until you come to the railway station.

[9] Turn right and follow the road round the new Tesco (opened late 2010) onto Eagle Street.  Turn right up Eagle Street to the mini roundabout..

[10] Carefully cross the road into Paradise Street and follow the road to the end where you will arrive back at the Accrington Palls building again.

A. Platts Lodge and the red painted Columns; these once carried the railway lines over the lodge on the line to Manchester. The lodge is now a small nature reserve and home to many species of wildlife.

B. The Globe Centre, formerly Platts International and before that Howard and Bullough which started in 1853. By 1930, total floor space amounted to fifty acres and at its height, Howard and Bullough employed over 6000 people.

C. The bridge over the railway tracks is the original bridge but without its roof.
