Description

[1] Leave Osler House Health Centre and walk straight ahead along Potter Street past the shops on the right to reach the Red Lion public House.

[2] Cross Potter Street  using the zebra crossing at the Red Lion and turn left to return along Potter Street to the junction with Southern Way.

Note the Potter Street Baptist church on the opposite side of Southern Way.

[3] Turn right into Southern Way and  follow it to the end, crossing Carters Mead  [7] on the right and passing a children's playground on the right and then a sign giving a brief history of Potter Street, also on the right.

[4] Just before the roundabout at the end of Southern Way, turn right onto a cycle track. Continue straight ahead past a cycle track junction and keep the main road (A414) on the left hand side behind a hedgerow. Pass one unpaved footpath two paved footpaths, all on the right and then reach another paved path opposite a green lamppost numbered 10245.

[5] Turn right onto this footpath  which has a concrete paneled fence on the left and a brick wall on the right.

[6] At the end of the footpath, where it reaches a road, turn right and follow this road (Carters Mead) passing a post box on the right. Cross the road at a safe point and continue to the end of Carters Mead, passing Potter Street Primary School on the right.

[7] At the T junction turn left and continue to the end of Southern Way, then turn left onto Potter Street to cross the road using the zebra crossing [2] and turn right to return to Osler House [1].

Be aware of cyclists and always walk on the pedestrian side of cycle tracks.

POI information

A. Potter Street Baptist church

This Baptist Church began in 1662, when, because of religious persecution, a group of Christians met in secret in Parndon Woods, Harlow. When freedom of religion was granted, Baptists could meet openly, and a plot of land was acquired here in Potter Street. Following the death of William Woodward the congregation spread its ministry and became two Baptist churches. Harlow Baptist Church is based in Fore Street, Old Harlow and Potter Street.
Buildings. The current chapel was built in 1756. The chapel is one of the oldest meeting houses of its type and was extended backwards a few years later. The rear extension housed schoolrooms on two floors. There was a wide gallery round three sides of the chapel. In 1905 the organ was installed.
