[1] Cross the A35 road with care, take the bridleway opposite to a minor road and turn right. Follow the road for about 500m (ignoring the turning back to the right) then take the byway to the right to Coryton Farm.
[2] Pass into the farmyard turning left before the weighbridge in front of the farm house and cross the Corry Brook by the footbridge. Continue along the by- way through a gate to reach the river Yarty which is crossed by a footbridge at Higher Westwater.
[3] The route now leaves the byway to turn left before the buildings and runs parallel with the river through the meadows for almost 1.5 miles.
Sharp eyes may spot kingfishers and herons along this stretch.
[4] Continue along the river path until it reaches a minor road. Turn left then right to continue along the east bank of the river but it is worthwhile going on a few steps to look at the old Beckford Bridge
(A) The bridge is said to be one of the remaining packhorse bridges in Devon.
Some 200m, after crossing a footbridge the route leaves the river to go over two fields diagonally right to join a byway leading to Yarty Farm.
[5] Turn left on the byway through the farm buildings then on reaching a concrete road bear right and then continue uphill past an elegant row of cream dwellings. Turn left on an unsurfaced track which is the footpath to Waterhouse Farm. On reaching minor road continue straight ahead..
[6] In approximately 25 meters pass the entrance to Waterhouse Farm on the left and in approximately another 25 meters turn left and climb the bank to a stile.. Go ahead past a plantation of young trees on the right to a stile then immediately turn left through a field gate to rejoin the path through the meadows to Case Bridge. Cross the road and follow the path ahead which turns to the left over a footbridge and continue bearing right to a field gate into the lane.
[7] Turn left for 150m, to North Mill Farm. Where lane turns to the right go ahead towards a large wooden barn and then turn right at waymarker post to follow path round the buildings and along a fence to a stile. Cross the stile and bear diagonally left to the far left hand corner of the field and pass through a gate. Then with the hedge on the right carry straight on over a crossing of footpaths to the lane at Lake Farm.
[8] Turn left on the lane and follow it to the crossroads at Longbridge and continue straight ahead. The large house on the right corner of the lane to Moxhays was previously the Longbridge Inn.
[9] At Moxhays turn left and then at road sign warning of a ford ahead turn right onto a path alongside the river. This footpath continues for about half a mile then diverts to follow the hedge to Stevens Farm. Go to the right of the farm buildings and through the garden of the adjoining house (Orchard Cottage) to exit on to the main road
[10] From Stevens Farm, turn right onto the main A30 road and after 100m cross with care and take the footpath along the track to Bridge Meadows Farm. Go through 2 gates and then bear right and pass through a further gate into a field. Turn right along the hedge to a stile, cross and turn left. The path follows the hedge for about 200m passing a small copse on the left before continuing across the open field to a gate and stile opposite at the end of a wire fence. Cross the stile bear left and cross the field to another stile in the hedge which is on the line of the Devon/Somerset County Boundary. Continue along the hillside with the hedge, a line of oak trees, on the right then bear slightly left through an iron gate in the middle of the hedge opposite. Cross the next field to another gate and follow the rough track ahead through several gates and the yard at Howley Farm. Bear right and go along the road passing the entrance to Hayne Farm on the left. Pass the Howley Tavern on the left and take the next road turning left between houses.
An alternative is to go through the farmyard past a weighbridge then continuing to the right of a big shed and through an iron gate on to a track; but an easier and cleaner walk is to keep to the lane.
[11] Continue down the lane from Howley and at Lapswater Cottage bear left uphill.
(B) At the hilltop Stockland TV mast is visible on the horizon to the left with a fine view over the wide Yarty Valley.
Continue downhill, bear left at the T-junction and follow the minor road under the busy A303 road.
An alternative is to take the signposted bridleway along the hedge at Lapswater Cottage through a gate and uphill to a gate opposite to join a track. After half a mile on the track reach an open field and turn sharp left to a gate on the left of the farm buildings at Woodhayes. Turn left though the gate on to the lane. (This route can be muddy and enclosed and the lane offers a better walk).
