Description

[1] From the Stilton Cheese Inn, turn right (east) along High Street. Follow right and left bends, passing All Saints Church on the right.

[2] Cross straight over Town End and take the footpath to the right of some farm buildings. Go through a gate and continue straight ahead, with modern housing on the right. Enter an open field and keep going in the same direction (roughly east). Where the path divides, go straight on through a farmyard with a white house on the right. Enter the field ahead, which may contain horses. At some farm buildings on the left, the path jinks right and then immediately left. Continue generally in an easterly direction. Just before a wood, the path goes right, over a ditch, then bears left (signposted). Go through a wood and continue uphill. After going through three gates, pass to the right of a house and emerge onto a road. This is Main Street, Cold Overton.

[3] Turn right on Main Street. Pass the church of St John the Baptist on the right, and Cold Overton Hall, also on the right. At the junction, turn right into Somerby Road. After 150 metres, come to a road junction. Follow the road to the left, signposted 'Knossington'.

[4] After 100m, take the footpath to the left. Cross Oakham Road and go onto the path on the other side. Bear right and continue towards a white house in the distance. Turn left when the path joins a road (Cold Overton Road). At the T-junction with Main Street, turn right and enter Knossington.

[5] Turn second left on Owston Road. When the road bends to the right, take the lane straight ahead and through a gate.

[6] When the lane bends slightly right, take the path bearing left (easy to miss, perhaps behind a pile of bales). Continue straight ahead, across a field and over a footbridge. Further on, after another footbridge, bear left through a gate (unmarked) and up the hill. At the path T-junction, turn right. Cross straight over Oakham Road and follow the minor road on the other side, signposted 'Launde Abbey'. Take the footpath on the right, heading west. Keep to the left as you approach some farm buildings.

[7] At the footpath T-junction the derelict Withcote Hall is ahead. Take the Leicestershire Round through the farm buildings to the right. Follow the concrete-paved lane to its junction with a road. Go straight across, up an avenue of trees and through a gate into a wood. At the path junction in the wood, go straight ahead following the yellow markers. Emerge into a field, bear slightly left and go downhill. Continue across fields in a generally north-westerly direction till the footpath becomes a track. Follow this to the T-junction with a road. (Hill Top Farm is on the right.) Turn right, following the 'Leicestershire Round' sign. In about 100m, come to a road junction. Turn left, following the sign to Owston. Go through Owston, following the twists and turns of the road. At a signpost indicating 'Newbold, Burrough, Gated Road' straight on, go ahead. After a bridge, follow the Leicestershire Round sign to the right. Continue in a generally northerly direction until emerging into Manor Lane, Somerby. Bear left to the junction with High Street. Turn left on High Street. The Stilton Cheese Inn is on the left-hand side.
