Getting there

From Pool Meadow bus station in the city centre, take a no. 6 or 6A to Tile Hill library.

By car from the inner ring road A4053, take the B4101 towards Knowle. A mile after crossing the A45, turn right into Bushberry Avenue at traffic lights. At the end of the Avenue you will find the library opposite you.
Description

[1] From the library, cross the road at the pedestrian crossing. Turn right and walk along Jardine Crescent to the island then turn left into Bushberry Avenue.

[2] Take the second turn right from Bushberry Avenue into Frisby road and walk to the end.

[3] Turn left into Hawthorn Lane then shortly after the bus stop on the right hand side, find the entrance to Pig Wood at a metal barrier. See photo.

The name Pig Wood comes from the ancient right to graze swine on fallen acorns and beech mast in woodland. The wood has existed for 1000 years. There is a mixture of deciduous and coniferous trees.

[4] As you enter the wood, ignore the small path to your left.  Continue forwards at the next junction until the concrete path that you are following turns sharp right.  Unless you wish to take the easy access alternative route, directions below, turn left off the path and then immediately right  onto the grass path.  Continue forwards and at the T-junction, turn left.  Continue on this path which will bring you out of Pig Wood onto Tile Hill Lane adjacent to Tile Hill Wood school.

Instead of turning left off the concrete path, continue along the concrete path with the metal edge as it goes to the right.  Continue across 2 wooden footbridges, past a small pond on your left to a path junction.Turn left to leave the wood at the same point the you entered it.  Turn right  down Hawthorn Lane, to Tile Hill lane.  Turn left and walk to the traffic light at the bottom of Bushberry Road.  Cross this road at the lights to rejoin the main route at waypoint 8. Caution, this is a busy road junction.

[5] Cross Tile Hill Lane. Extreme caution needed, this is a busy road and bus route.  there is no pedestrian crossing here at the brow of the hill. Once you have crossed the road, turn right and find the entrance to Plants Hill Wood at a gate about 100m along Tile Hill Lane.

Enter the wood and walk on the path to the centre of the wood.

[6] At a T-junction with a wide grassy path, turn left and follow the wide path to bring you out of the wood.  Cross the grassed area onto  Gravel Hill. Walk along Gravel HIll to its junction with Tile Hill Lane.

Alternatively, to make the walk up to nearly 2 miles, turn right shortly after entering the Plants Hill Wood and follow the paths around 3 sides of the wood keeping the edge of the wood on your right. The paths will bring you out of the wood at Plants Hill Crescent adjacent to Leigh Church of England School. From there you can walk on the grassland adjacent to the wood to reach Gravel Hill.

[7] Turn right and walk along the footpath which is parallel to the road, behind a hedge.  Take the 2nd exit from this path on the left, to cross Tile Hill Lane at the traffic light, to the right hand side of Bushberry Avenue.

[8] Take the footpath ahead which goes behind some trees. If you have suitable footwear you may wish to walk along the path through the trees, which runs parallel to the tarmac path.  After passing the ends of four blocks of flats, turn left into the cul-de-sac.   At the road junction cross the road turning left then immediately right to take the path between the rows of houses.

[9] At the end of the path turn right into Bohun Street and immediately left into James Green Road.  Follow James Green Road taking the sharp left bend then turn right into the footpath between a bungalow and a pair of semi-detached houses, to bring you back to Jardine Crescent. Turn left and walk back to the library.
