Getting there

Arriving by coach on a dedicated cathedral visit, visitors will be dropped close to the cathedral.

Arriving by car there are numerous car parks but all a walk away from the cathedral. The nearest is Fairfax St between Coventry Sports Centre ("the elephant over the road") and the Gala Bingo Centre. From there walk under the green concrete student residence that bridges the road and up to the cathedral.

There are free toilets in Pool Meadow bus station, adjacent to Gala Bingo. They are open in the daytime.

There are 6 trains per hour from the rail station to London Euston and Birmingham, stopping at various intermediate stations.

There is one train per hour to Leamington Spa, Banbury, Oxford and Nuneaton.

Description

[1] From the cathedral steps on Priory Street, walk up the steps or up the ramp and between the old and new cathedrals and through the gardens.

At Holy Trinity church turn left into Cuckoo Lane.

At the crossroads turn right in front of the Golden Cross pub and walk along the curved Pepper Lane.

At the end you enter and cross the Bull Yard.    Noting  (B)   the Phoenix statue and fountain in Bull Yard.    On your left as you cross Bull Yard is the spire of Christ Church  (C).

[3]  Walk straight on along Warwick Row as it curves away from Warwick Rd.  Note the terrace of buildings, The Quadrant (D) on the other side of the road.

Cross Greyfriars Road at the pedestrian crossing then turn left and follow the pathway through the pleasant Greyfriars Green (E} and under the elevated road.

[4] Follow the path along the bridge over the ring road and across the road again at the pedestrian crossing.

Greyfriars Green and the road crossings have been altered in 2012 to improve the pedestrian route so maps and guides may be out of date.

POI information

(C) CHRIST CHURCH, situated in the angle of Union Street and Warwick Lane, was built in 1830- 32 and incorporated the 14th-century tower and spire of the former Greyfriars church.

The body of Christ Church was reduced to a shell by bombing in 1940. It was eventually decided to demolish the ruins and rebuild on another site further from the centre of the city.  The octagonal tower, the smallest of Coventry's 'three spires', has been preserved

(D) and (E)  Greyfriars Green is in a conservation area.  There is a curved  terrace of early Victorian buildings known as the Quadrant, set back from Warwick Road.  These are grade II listed.

Notes

This is the best way of getting from the cathedral to the station in poor weather because it is sheltered in part. It is the only step-free route of the ones in this series from the cathedral to the station.
