Description

[1] Start from the south door of the church. The church has a distinctive ruined tower. Cross the Market Place, leaving the ornate market cross on the right, and pass down the narrow Bank Loke. Turn right into Grammar School Road. Horatio and William Nelson were pupils at this school. At the roundabout turn left and cross over the A149 into the Norwich Road B1150. Continue under the railway bridge for 500 yards almost as far as the two water towers on the right. Immediately before the towers, on the right side of the road, is the first of the stump crosses commemorating the revolt.

The Peasants Revolt 1381 was caused by the imposition of a Poll Tax. The remains, or stumps, of two crosses on the Norwich Road commemorate the battles.

[2] Take the track on the right, just before the stump, between the towers and a bungalow and follow it for about 100 yards. The path now crosses a field diagonally to the left to a point in the opposite corner by a pond. Follow the waymarked path to the left of the hedge as far as a broad track.

The fields ahead are the site of the battle in 1381

The second stump cross is on Norwich Road to the left. Turn right along the track which, after about 100 yards, becomes a footpath along the edge of a field keeping a hedge to the right. Follow the path briefly into Lord Anson’s Wood and when it leaves the wood keep to the left following the wood edge. Where the path meets a road cross over and along a “no through road”. Just before the railway bridge climb the embankment and turn left along Weavers Way.

The name is from the Flemish Weavers who settled in the area to produce Worsted and Walsham cloth.

[3] Follow the disused track for 3/4 mile to Felmingham Station. 200 yards beyond the station, in a cutting, take a path to the right. At the end of the second field the path goes through a narrow path between two bungalows into a cul-de-sac. In 100 yards turn left along a road to the Church. Continue, past the Church on the right, as far as a T-junction.

[4] Take the footpath on the right along a field edge and turn left where the path reaches a track. In 50 yards turn right along another track into Bryant’s Heath. Keep to the main path easterly, by bearing left, through the woods and heath. This is the site of the final confrontation in the Revolt. Eventually all paths join at the far side of the heath where a grass path leads on to Tungate. The ruined tower of North Walsham Church is just visible ahead. At the road turn right and in 300 yards turn left along Weavers Way.

[5] Follow the old railtrack as far as a road. Turn right along Station Road keeping left at a fork. At a T-junction turn left under the railway bridge and retrace the route back to the start.
