Getting there

Buses 7, 21, 24 and 38 stop in Tomlinson Avenue near the Community Centre.

There are free parking bays in Haymarket Road by the park a short distance from the Community Centre.

Description

[1] Turn left out of the community centre and walk along Landrace Road, crossing Shepherds Road and Haymarket Road with care.

[2] Go into the park and take the path around the right hand side until you reach an exit just past the skateboard ramps. This is opposite Cedar Close.

[3] Go out through the gate,  cross Regis Road carefully and go into Cedar Close and into the alley at the end of the short road. This alley leads into Kimberley Close. Cross this to the alley almost opposite you and follow it through to a main road, Poynters Road. Turn Left onto this road. (If you do not wish to go into Poynters House go to [5])

[4] The building opposite is Poynters House, the home of the Disability Resource Centre. If you are walking on a Wednesday between  10am and 3pm, you can go in for free, impartial advice. If you wish to do so, cross at the pedestrian lights. When you are finished cross back over carefully again using the at the pedestrian lights and turn right to walk along Poynters Road

[5] Walk along Poynters Road until, just before the Shell garage you reach the junction with Brunel Road. There is no road sign, but there is a green box with the number 44 on it.

[6] Turn into Brunel Road and walk along the left pavement. As you pass a turning on the right, you will be able to see views of the Chiltern Hills. Follow Brunel Road until you again reach Lewsey Green Park.

[7] Take the path along the side of the park that follows Brunel Road, pass between the low green rails and leave at the far end opposite Thatch Close.

[8] Cross the road carefully and walk along Thatch Close and into the car park on the left at the end.

[9] Go through the archway by the blue pillars into the Tomlinson Avenue Shopping Arcade.  Walk in front of the Co-op and leave the arcade at the other end of the shop to walk out onto Shepherds Road.

[10] Turn right and follow Shepherds Road to Landrace Road. Turn right and walk along Landrace Road back to the community centre.

POI information

A.  Lewsey Farm was situated on land belonging to the Lucy (Lewsey) family who owned the manor from 1305 to 1455. The manor then passed to the Wingate family. Most of the manor buildings were destroyed by fire in 1832.

B. The Disability Resource Centre is open every Wednesday for Drop In Day. Visitors are welcome without appointment between 10 am and 3 pm. You can try out items such as beds, bath lifts, riser-recliner chairs, scooters. These are demonstration models, so there is no sales pressure. This service allows you to try before you buy. They offer free impartial advice on daily living aids to people of any age with any disability. You can phone them for advice on 01582 470900

C. The Chiltern Hills are within easy reach. The paths through the chalk hills are easily accessible from Half Moon Lane off High Street South Dunstable.
