Getting there

From the A3066 Melplash to Bridport road, turn left SP Loders. Take the second right, SP Loders. Park in the village street opposite the pub.

Description

[1] From the pub car park, turn right down the road. Ignore the first turning on left but take the second left (New Street Lane) when the main road bears round to the right. Walk down the road, under a disused railway bridge, past The Old Mill with working waterwheel & keep straight ahead along the track to the left of river towards Uploders. Where the track turns right towards Uploders, continue straight ahead through the metal gate into the field. Head straight across the field keeping to the right hand hedge to the far corner.

[2] Walk along the track for about 50 yards bearing slightly left into a field. Bear right but away from the right hand edge of field down towards farm buildings. Pass these on your right. After the buildings go through the gate ahead to emerge onto a lane. Walk along then lane, Matravers. At the T junction turn left through a metal gate onto the Pig Farm surfaced track. In 50 yards (in front of barns) follow the footpath sign to the right along an enclosed path. Continue straight ahead across the field following the right hand hedge to the stile in opposite hedge. Cross the stile & continue slightly right to the stile in the opposite hedge then turn right to emerge onto the road by Folly Cottage.

There might be a lot of deep slurry after Matravers, hat can be avoided by the alternative of continuing straight on at the T junction and then turning left at Spyway Road to rejoin the main route further down the road .

Turn left and walk along the road towards Spyway. Walk up the hill and just before reaching the first house (& the Spyway Inn pub) turn left into the track SP Powerstock.

[3] In 20 yards, go through the metal gate ahead into a field with an electricity pylon. Keep to left hand edge & go through the gate in the far corner. Keep ahead on the track which goes downhill then continues straight on across two fields to a lane.

[4] Turn left & walk along the lane for about a mile. At a T junction, continue ahead along the road & uphill passing the remains of the railway bridge. Where the road levels out, turn right through a wide gap in the hedge & immediately bear left over a stile into a sports field. Cross the field to a stile half way along the opposite edge, then bear left to a stile & steps in the corner onto the lane. Turn right & walk through Nettlecombe keeping left at the first junction. Eggardon Hill is over to the right.

(A) Eggardon Hill is An Iron Age Hill Fort built about 2500 years ago which is now owned by the National Trust.

[5] At the Marquis of Lorne pub, cross the road into the track opposite the pub. In .25 mile turn left to walk along the right hand edge of the field & emerge onto the road by a farm. Continue straight ahead through the farmyard then downhill along the track to Mappercombe Manor. Just past the manor the track bears to the right & continues as a well marked track finally passing a copse on the left into a field. Keep to left hand edge of this field beside copse then turn right uphill at field corner.

(B) Mappercombe Manor is mostly early 17 century  with a 15 century east wing. The manor of Mappercombe originally belonged to Cerne Abbey, but eventually came into the possession of the Browne family at the beginning of the 17 century, who began the process of enlargement of the existing house. From the late 18 century to the present day, a succession of distinguished naval officers owned Mappercombe, with the son of the late Lt Commander William Crutchley RN becoming the present owner in 2007. The house is grade I listed.

[6] Halfway up the field edge turn slightly left onto a grassy track & pass through a marked gate. Continue downhill keeping left & cross a stream then climb up onto the disused railway opposite.

(C) The Disused Railway Line is part of the old Bridport to Maiden Newton branch line.

Turn right & follow the track through the trees for about 0.5 mile. Opposite a gate on left, turn right off track, through a fence (ignoring the gate and kissing gate on right - leading to Dorset Wildlife Trust Peascombe Nature Reserve) & head left uphill to a gate. Turn right beside allotments then left along a grassy track with a cemetery on the right. At the hedge turn right then go through a wrought iron gate and head down to the right to emerge onto a road. Turn left & continue straight ahead at the junction walking downhill back into Loders. Turn right at the junction back to the pub.
