Description

This inner city walk has a number of busy roads, please take care when crossing these and use pedestrian crossings where possible

[1]  With your back to the sports centre turn right towards the car park then walk through the car park to join St Margarets Way.

[2]  Turn left and walk along St Margarets Way for about 300m, crossing South Church Gate until you reach the traffic lights by the church.

[3]  Cross over and go on down Sanvey Gate.  Take the first road on the left, Burgess Street and then turn right onto Long Lane.

[4]  Take the footpath left just after the John Lewis car park and cross Vaughan Way at the pedestrian crossing to emerge onto Causeway Lane.

Take care when crossing the busy car park access road.

[5]  Turn first right by Next onto Bath House Lane, with the Highcross Shopping Centre to the left, and then bear left through St Peters Square onto Highcross Lane which then becomes Shires Lane.

[6]  At the end turn left onto High Street and walk to the Clock Tower.

(A)  The Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower was built in 1868 as a memorial to local benefactors Simon De Montfort, William Wyggeston, Sir Thomas White and Alderman Gabriel Newton whose statues sit one in each corner.

[7]  Turn left at the Clock Tower onto Church Gate and continue to its end.  Keep right and almost immediately cross Burleys Way using the underpass, or pedestrian crossings if preferred, to emerge onto St Margarets Way.

[8]  Turn right onto St Margarets Street, just after St Margaret's Church, and then turn left onto Bay Street.

(B)  St Margaret's Church is one of the oldest churches in Leicester and may lie on an old Anglo-Saxon site.  Parts the church date from the early 1200s and it has been designated as a Grade 1 listed building.  The West Tower, which is 108ft high, was built in 1444 when the church was rebuilt.

[9]  At its end turn right onto Friday Street and, where the road bends right, just before the British Legion Centre turn left onto Abbey Walk, cross the canal bridge and return to the centre.
