Route Summary This circular walk starts at County Hall and brings you high above Durham with one of the most spectacular views over the Cathedral and Castle from Hangman's Hill.

Getting there

Parking is available at the Durham Light Infantry Museum or Wharton Park. This route is also accessible via public transport. Durham County Hall is only a short distance from Durham's railway and bus station.

Description

[1] Exit County Hall and turn left on the road to walk towards the traffic lights.

[2] Cross the road at the traffic lights and walk straight ahead. After a small building, turn left to walk down 'North Road' with the 'Garden House Inn' on your left. Follow the road for a distance.

[3] Walk downhill until the first pedestrians crossing. Cross the road.

[4] When you crossed the road, turn right to walk up and bear left to follow 'Back Western Hill'. Follow this road for a distance. Walk slowly as it is very steep.

[5] Turn left into 'Valeside' and walk until you reached a hedge in front of you.

[6] Turn right and follow a narrow tarmac path through two houses. You will enter a grassy area, walk further up until the highest point. You will have a marvellous view from here.

[7] When you are ready to return, walk back down to 'Valeside' and turn left to retrace your steps to 'Back Western Hill'.

[8] Turn left to follow the road uphill.

[9] At the end of the road, you will reach 'Fieldhouse Lane'. Turn left here and follow it for a while. You will pass St Leonard's School on your right.

[10] Turn right into 'South / North Crescent' and follow it until the end.

[11] Cross the road, and walk over a grassy bit to the next pedestrian crossing.

Take care when crossing the busy roads.

[12] Cross the road and turn right to follow the path around to the next pedestrian crossing.

[13] Cross the road again, and then turn right to return to the starting point.
