Description

[1] Leave the College and turn left into Cope Street. Cross Ladywood Middleway at the pedestrian controlled traffic lights and turn to the right. Cross over the bridge and take the path to the left, down onto the Birmingham Canal. As you reach the canal turn sharp left and walk under the bridge you have just crossed.

[2] Follow the towpath until the first exit which is Rotton Park Street. Where Rotton Park Street joins Icknield Port Road turn and then cross over the road at the pedestrian controlled traffic lights.

[3] As you cross the road you will see the entrance to the Edgbaston Reservoir. As you enter you will see a Sailing Club on the right and a walkway across a dam on the left. Take the left hand way.

(A) Situated close to the city centre, Edgbaston Reservoir is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. It was built in 1827 by Thomas Telford as a feed for Birmingham canal system and is still used for that purpose today. The 70 acres site is mainly open water and supports a variety of birdlife; it is also a valuable city site for animals such as newts and bats. A belt of woodland and grassland encircles the reservoir providing an oasis of natural beauty in an urban setting. There are currently no public toilets on site. The Ranger Service for Perry Barr and Ladywood is based at Edgbaston Reservoir. It provides a public information service - http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/rangerevents an annual programme of events and educational sessions which include school visits, Forest School and work experience placements. Working in partnership with the police, environmental services, wildlife trust and other agencies the aim is to protect, promote and enhance the natural environment of the Reservoir for the benefit of its wildlife, heritage, the local community and visitors.

Facilities - Walkers and joggers can enjoy the approximately 2.8 km (1.75 miles) path around the reservoir. There is rowing provided by The Birmingham Rowing Club, sailing provided by The Midland Sailing Club and a Sea Cadet Centre - TS Vernon you can find out more about joining the Sea Cadets by phoning 0121 454 3136. Fishing is very popular at the site.

[4] Having followed the path and passed a; building turn left and exit the Reservoir into Reservoir Road. Take the first left into Osler Street and follow this road to its junction with Icknield Port Road. Turn right, cross road and take Freeth Street.

[5] Freeth Street joins Ladywood Middleway but for an acceptable short cut walk in front of the industrial units rather than following the road round. At Ladywood Middleway turn left and left again to Cope Street, returning to the College.
