M25 J3, A20, M20, A2, Swanley railway stations, buses.

Description

[1]  Start at The Oaks surgery, Swanley.  With The Oaks behind you turn left onto the path alongside the recreation ground.  With the recreation ground on your left continue along the footpath and take a right through the railings at Aldi into Nightingale Way. You will now be in the pedestrian shopping area of Swanley.

[2] Continue through Asda acar park following the footpath next to the Asda bulding to exit from car park (gap in wall) onto Bartholomew Way.

[3]  Turn left to cross road at traffic lights initially as it is safer to do so, before turning right and then left into Birchwood Park Avenue.

[4] At end of Birchwood Park Avenue take the footpath in the left hand corner of the cul-de-sac.  Continue to the end, ignoring the road exits on the right, and pass through several cycle barriers. The path ends at New Barn Road, a main road at the junction of Swanley Lane (Five Wents)

[5]  Cross road at Five Wents and turn into Highlands Hill on other side of the road.  Warning!  This junction is on a bend with no footpath so initially it would be better to turn right at exit from footpath [4) and walk up Swanley Lane a little (towards Swanley) to cross where there is a footpath and road is straight, before turning left and then right into Highlands Hill. (A)

[6]  A short distance along Highlands Hill, on right hand side, take a footpath next the Harrington's nursery. (B)

[7] Footpath opens to field with right of way across, bear left and go through gap in hedge. Ahead is cube building with reservoir .  Bear left of this reservoir (keeping reservoir on your right) and bear left along the  top of field to a footpath on your right.

[8] Take this footpath, over a style, and follow to end, pass a little row of houses on the left and an allotment on the right exiting onto Swanley Village Road opposite Red Lion pub.

[9] Turn left onto Swanley Village Road which joins Highlands Hill and walk down to Five Wents. (At Swanley village take a detour on right down School Lane to visit St Paul's church if desired). The road down to Five Wents does not have a footpath, walk safely in single file on the right toward on-coming traffic. You return with Harringtons Nursery on your left.

[10]  Turn left at Five Wents to walk along Swanley Lane to end.

[11] Turn left into High Street  and cross at first set of traffic lights and then turn right, past the Lullingstone Castle Pub (on your left) (C)

[12] Cross footbridge over railway line and turn left into Nightingale Way.  Take footpath on left to White Oak Surgery on far side of car park.

POI information

It was originally a brick hut  60 ft x 25 ft and was dismantled brick by brick to be reconstructed at Five Wents having had several refurbishments and extensions.

B. Horses in field alongside footpath.

C. This part of the High Street has some of the oldest buildings in Swanley.  Once you have crossed the road, look back and you can see the old sign for the Swanley Dairy on one of them.
