[1] From Newfield Hall walk down the driveway to join the main road. Turn Right and, after ignoring a minor road on the right, cross Newfield Bridge over the river Aire. This road can be very busy and is narrow in places – take care.
(A) Newfield Hall, an imposing stone mansion built in 1856, stands proudly at the end of a tree-lined drive in two acres of mature grounds. It is now owned and operated by HF Holidays Ltd. For the history of Newfield Hall see http://kirkbymalham.info/KMI/calton/newfield.html
Shortly after the bridge, where the road bears right, Turn Left on a minor road (signposted to Bell Busk). After just 50 metres Turn Right through a gate (signposted to Kirk Syke). Follow the path, passing below a small wood on your left, and cross a field aiming for the farm buildings ahead. The path can be very wet and boggy in places. Go through a gate in the corner of the field and head towards a stile between two farm buildings ahead.
[2] After crossing the stile Turn Right along Kirk Syke Lane. When the track joins a minor road at a T junction, Turn Left towards the village of Airton.
[3] Just before reaching the first house in the village on the right, Turn Right through a wooden gate onto a bridleway (signposted to Eshton Road). After a short distance the bridleway joins the main Gargrave to Malham road (a narrow and busy road). Turn Left and walk into the village of Airton where you will shortly arrive at a crossroads with a grassy village green. Turn Right (signposted to Calton and Winterburn) and follow this road downhill until crossing a bridge over the river Aire.
[4] Immediately after the bridge Turn Right onto the Pennine Way (signposted to Gargrave). This path can be very boggy at the beginning, making progress slow and difficult.
(B) The Pennine Way was the first national trail opened in 1965. It was the brainchild of Tom Stephenson from the Ramblers Association and runs 268 miles from Edale to Kirk Yetholm. For more information about the Pennine Way see http://penninewayassociation.co.uk/
The path initially keeps close to the river then moves slightly away to cross a field. Cross a wall stile then Bear Right to cross another wall stile nearby. The wall is now on your left. Cross another stile after a few metres and follow the path, crossing one further wall stile before reaching Newfield Bridge. Retrace your steps back to Newfield Hall at [1].
