[1] Leave Newfield Hall by the main drive. Turn right when it meets the road (care needed as narrow verge) and take first right, following road to T junction where turn sharp right sign posted to Winterburn and Hetton. Go along this road for 400m past a barn (Shoulbreads Laithe) with two arched windows on right.
(A) Shoulbreads Laithe: Stone cottage and barn ('laithe' is old Norsk for barn) with interesting arched windows.
Just before stream go through gate on left and follow small stream up by edge of field. Cross stream over wide bridge, turn sharp left and continue up track to pass large green silo and barn. At T junction of tracks turn left and continue into small hamlet of Calton.
Turn right, fingerpost to Weets Top, and follow track downhill to ford. Cross over the stream (Foss Gill) via Iris's Bridge (stone sign), continuing along track through woodland. Where the bridleway leaves the wood (fingerpost to Weets Top) keep right up side of the Gill to view the falls.
(B) Foss Gill waterfalls go through a secluded narrow wooded gorge. There are two main falls, the larges of which is about 3m.
Retrace your steps from the waterfall and return to Calton. Go straight on and follow road into Airton. Cross Airton bridge and continue up hill into the village keeping to the right of village green. Turn right at the top of the green then after 100m turn left cross the road (care needed) to enter church grounds through metal gates.
(C) Airton village was originally a Quaker village and it still contains a Quaker meeting house. An old mill is on the River Aire, after which the village is named. There's been a mill on the site for many centuries. Originally, it was owned by the monks of Bolton Abbey for crushing corn. Later it was converted into a cotton mill. It was substantially rebuilt near the end of the eighteenth century, when a substantial mill race was built, the remains of which are clearly visible. During the second world war Reckitt & Coleman moved their Dettol (disinfectant) manufacturing from Hull to this mill, where there was less risk from enemy bombers. Apparently, the smell of Dettol is still detectable under the drain covers. The mill was converted into residential apartments in 1972.
[3] Walk around the left (south) side of the church, leave churchyard to join bridleway where turn left. Follow bridleway between cottages to road. Turn right then immediately left at sign post for Bell Busk along lane for 300m. Bear right into Kirk Syke Lane (sign posted Kirk Syke Farm). Pass the farm and cross ford via footbridge on left.
[4] Just after the ford turn left over stile onto footpath across field at bottom of a shallow valley. Follow footpath through two gates then bear right towards small wood. Pass small wood on increasingly obvious path and through gate onto roadside. Turn left on road (care needed as narrow verge) then right at T junction, cross Newfield Bridge (crossing route of Pennine Way). Follow road as it bends right to reach driveway to Newfield Hall on your left.
