Route Summary This Walking for Health circular walk takes in the quiet residential areas of old and new Groby, Marina and Stamford Memorial Parks and the 1832 Mineral Railway track. It has some good scenic views of Bradgate Park. Short walk available.

Getting there

By bus: Arriva bus services 26, 28, 29 and 29A from Leicester St Margaret's Bus Station stop outside the Stamford Arms, Groby.  

By car: There are no public car parks in the village centre.  Some on street parking is available nearby.

Description

There are a number of busy roads to cross.  Take care when crossing and use pedestrian crossings and refuges where available

[1]  Turn left outside the Village Hall, cross the road and soon turn right onto Pymm Ley Lane. After a short distance turn left onto Pymm Lee Close, continue forward along a path onto Meadow Court RoadAt the end, of Meadow Court Road, turn left onto Dalby Drive and continue to its end. Turn right and then right again onto Marston Drive. Continue forward round the left bend onto Castell Drive.

[2]  At the end turn right into the Marina Park car park.  Take the tarmac path in the top left corner. Follow the path clockwise all the way around the perimeter of the Marina and Stamford Memorial ParksFrom the second car park you reach, at the top right corner of Stamford Memorial Park, walk down the drive at the left end, turn left onto Sycamore Drive then bear left onto Chestnut WalkTake the next road on the left, Beaumont Green, and continue forward. When the road bears left, turn right onto the path  between numbers 24 and 30.  Continue forward, over the end of a cul-de-sac and straight ahead along  Ulverscroft Drive. At then end, turn right onto Stamford Drive.

[3]  At the end turn right and continue along Laundon Way to Budgens.

For a shorter walk take the slope by the bus stop in front of Budgens and then continue forward on the path to the left of the car park onto Pymm Ley Lane.  Turn left at the end of Pymm Ley Lane to return to the Village Hall.

[4]  Cross over Laundon Way at the pedestrian crossing just beyond the supermarket. Take the path going straight across a grassy area. Ignore a cross path after 10 metres and continue to the road at the far end.  Turn left along the road,  Kings Way, and continue to the end. Turn right onto Lime Avenue and continue to the end. Cross Laundon Way. (Cross with care as there is no crossing provided.)  Turn left and then almost immediately right onto Garendon Way.  After a few metres turn left into Warrington Drive, at the end go through a gap, turn right onto the old mineral railway line and continue forwardCross over Spinney Close and turn right along the next road, Oaktree Close.  Turn left at the end and follow the road round to the right onto Glebe Road.

[5]  After a few metres, immediately beyond house number 5,  turn left down the path between the houses, continue past the allotments and the United Reformed Church onto the cobbles of Chapel Hill. Follow the cobbles left, then right, and keep straight ahead when they revert to tarmac. At the bottom of Chapel Hill turn left onto Crane Ley Road, down towards Barclays bank, and turn right onto Ratby Road. Immediately after the Santander Bank, and just before the Stamford Arms, turn right onto Rookery Lane. At the top of the hill turn left onto The Rookery and follow it to its far end where you return to the Village Hall.
