Description

This walk crosses a number of busy roads.  Please take care when crossing and use pedestrian crossings or refuges where available.

[1]  From the Village Hall cross over and turn left down Leicester Road.  Cross Pym Lee Lane and continue down the dual carriageway section to the bus stop at the bottom of the hill. Turn right (just after the bus shelter) onto Marston Drive and continue round onto Castell Drive.  At the end turn right past the barrier into Marina Drive car park. (beware of moving cars)

[2]  From the Marina Drive car park take the path at the top left of the car park. Continue on this path all the way round the left-hand side of the park passing the playground and BMX track on the right hand side and into Stamford Memorial Park (A) with the memorial to the right.  Continue around the edge of the park past the Stamford Drive car park to reach the second - Sycamore Drive - car park.

[3]  Continue forward across Sycamore Drive and pass through the footpath entrance. Cross the first field and take the exit at the top left of the second field onto Meadow Court Road.

Note:- these fields get very wet and muddy and may be unsuitable for wheeled vehicles. The alternative route turns left outside the park entrance onto Sycamore Drive.  Then take the first right into Hawthorn Rise, then left at the end onto Meadow Way.  Then turn right at the end of Meadow Way onto Pymm Ley Lane and go 30 metres to rejoin the route at [5].

[4]  Continue to the end of the road then turn left, taking the footpath between the houses onto Pymm Ley Close. Continue to the end of this road. Turn left onto Pymm Ley Lane, continue for about 50 metres.

For a shorter walk turn right at the end of Pymm Ley Close onto Pymm Ley Lane, continue to the end and turn left onto Leicester Road to return to the start.

[5]   Cross the road into Flaxfield Close. Continue to the T-junction, cross the road and take the path 20 metres to your left, which leads to a green space. When you reach the green space turn left at the first footpath. Continue across the end of Flaxfield Close then continue to the end of the footpath facing you. Turn left at the top onto Glebe Road and past Elizabeth Woodville School to the end.  At the end of Glebe Road turn right and continue to the top of Pymm Ley Lane.

[6]  Just before the car park turn right into Beacon Field along the gravelled footpath alongside Lady Jane Grey School.  Continue to the end of the playing field and follow the path between the houses.  Continue to the road and bear left around the bend. Almost immediately turn right into Garendon Way then, after passing Buckingham Close on the right, take the footpath through the hedges, a few metres further on. At the end of this footpath go left into Greys Drive and take the path through the field.

[7] At the end of the path turn right along the old Groby Granite Railway line (B).  Continue over Spinney Close and Oaktree Close then alongside the allotments to where the path ends at Ratby Road. Go right through the allotment car park then along the path through the allotments. At the end, by the Groby URC Church turn left onto the cobbles of Chapel Hill and continue forward. Turn left at the end onto Crane Ley Road then at the crossroads go right onto Ratby Road and pass the row of shops on the right. Turn right almost immediately onto Rookery Lane, between the Santander Bank and the Stamford Arms and, at the top of the hill, turn left onto The Rookery to return to the Village Hall. (take care as there is no pavement at the end of The Rookery)

POI information

(B) The Groby Granite Railway was completed in 1832 to link the Groby quarries to the Leicester and Swannington Railway and hence Leicester. It opened in 1832, just before the L&S and was thus one of the earliest railways in the Midlands, if not the conutry.
