[1] Start in Down Grange sports complex, Pack Lane, Basingstoke. Use the car park just inside the entrance.
With the cars behind you and the main entrance in front, head left toward the hockey fenced area but take the footpath just before it taking you down toward the road. Follow the path parallel to the road but inside the grassed area toward the Rugby Club, but passing to the right of the Rugby Club.
Continue past the Rugby Club on your left and follow the trail ahead to join the path alongside the road - Pack Lane. You will pass a shop and Indian restaurant on your right. Continue up to the main road junction and cross the road to continue forward, still on Pack Lane.
[2] At the end of the houses, where fields begin on both sides of the road, you will see Kite Hill on the right. Here turn left onto a broad footpath just after a narrow footpath
In a few yards turn right into a similar footpath that runs parallel to the road with the train line over on your right and a field on your left. Continue on this trail until you reach Oakley. At the end the footpath runs through a coppice where bluebells add colour in the spring. It will end on St Johns Road.
[3] As you emerge from the trees you will see a bridge on your right. Turn left away from the bridge. Ignore a first right curve in the road and instead continue ahead still on St Johns Road. Ignore a second right curve in the road and instead continue ahead into Pardown road.
[4] You will see a speed sign 30mph at a junction with gravel tracks. Turn left at the Puzzle Corner sign onto a footpath that will take you though the fields. It can get muddy but you will see well worn tracks to veer around the most common and muddy puddles without deviating from the route. Where the footpath forks left/straight on or right take the left fork to continue in the same direction. (you may see a particularly big muddy patch here. You can go forward and skirt the edge of the field to continue forward and avoid the curve and muddy patch).
Ignore several footpath signs and continue until you reach houses and a cross junction of well maintained footpaths.
[5] Continue forward on the broad path between the houses, ignoring the footpaths right and left of you. You are now on Fuzzy Drove. At the end turn left along the road for a few hundred yards.
[6] At the pedestrian crossing, with pub on your right, turn towards the pub. Walk to the left of the pub in front of a row of shops and keep ahead into the minor road at the end – Old Down Close. At a crossroads with Buttermere Drive ahead turn right and head uphill for a few hundred yards on Homesteads Road.
[7] Cross Coniston Road (on your left) then immediately cross a patch of grass, ignoring the trodden 'footpath' taking you back toward the road, and instead head toward a small row of trees in front of a modern church. This takes you diagonally between Coniston Road and Homesteads Road. Go through an obvious gap in the trees emerging onto the other side of Down Grange Sports complex. Turn left onto the footpath toward the rugby pitches. You can see the rugby posts through the trees ahead of you.
Skirt round the left of the playing field and Rugby pitches. Turn right in front of the Rugby Club and follow the path taking you to the right of the hockey courts and to the car park. Please avoid walking across the pitch as many extra feet can spoil play.
