Description

[1]  From the start turn right along Main Street and then immediately Right onto Barrows Lane.  At the end, just past the car breaking yard, turn left onto the Ivanhoe Trail cycleway.

(A)  This cycleway follows the route of the former Leicester to Swannington Railway from West Bridge Station in Leicester to Desford and Coalville.  The line opened in 1832 and carried coal from the Leicestershire coalfield and granite from the Groby quarries.  Passenger trains serving Glenfield and Ratby ceased in 1928 and the line finally closed in 1966.  It is possible to walk from West Bridge Station to the Railway Inn at Ratby along the old track bed - with diversions around the closed Glenfield tunnel

Follow the cycleway  for approximately 2km. passing under both the A46 and the M1

[2]  Where the path meets the first road turn right along Taverner Drive.  After a short distance turn left along Lockley Close. At the end of Lockley Close follow the footpath straight on through the park.  Bear left by the playground and walk through the car park. Turn right onto  Ferndale Drive and continue straight on.

[3]  After about 200 metres take the footpath to the right and follow it over the M1.

An alternative exists to avoid various stiles and the overgrown path. Take the footpath to the left parallel to the motorway. At the end of the footpath cross the stile and turn right along Sachevelle Way. After approximately 1.3km take the footpath on the right.

Otherwise, take the footpath straight in front, bear right and follow the footpath across the next two fields.  At the bottom of the second field cross over the stile and the stepping stones across the stream and continue to the A46.

[4]   Turn left at the footpath to walk along the side of the A46. Take care on this path as it narrow and can be overgrown with brambles. Upon reaching the footbridge turn use it to pass over the A46.  Continue through the next two fields.   Cross the Ivanhoe Trail cycleway and proceed onto Barrows Lane.   Turn left onto Main Street, the start is then on the left.
