Getting there

First Bus operate a regular service along Astill Lodge Road from Haymarket Bus Station - numbers 25 and 26.

Alight at Beaumont Lodge Primary school then walk to the shops and turn into the car park. Beaumont Lodge is the large old house on your right. The main door is through the gap on the right, signed 'Beaumont Lodge Reception'.

Description

Some of the pavements and paths are uneven in places - take care.

[1]  From the car park, with your back to the doctor's surgery, turn right and walk to Astill Lodge Road. Cross the car park entrance then cross Astill Lodge Road using the pedestrian refuge and take the path straight facing and continue along it. After about 500m you will pass a green space on your left. This is Astill Lodge Park.

[2]  Keep on to Astill Lodge Road.  Look out for cyclists, who share the path.

To shorten the walk, where the path reaches the end of the park and enters trees, go left at a path crossroads, alongside the trees. Go left again past the playground to exit the park onto Lipton Road. Continue from point [7].

This cycleway and footpath, Churchbell Way, runs between Beaumont Leys and Birstall.

[3]  After crossing Astill Lodge Road and passing Heatherbrook Primary School walk for another 80m and take the path on the left between the houses. At the first road (Stonywell Road) cross over and follow the path, which is just to your right. Continue over Stoneywell Road for the second time.

[4]  Just beyond  this second crossing of Stoneywell Road turn left onto the joining path and follow it the short distance to turn left onto Heatherbrook Road.

[5]  At the mini-roundabout at the end of  Heatherbrook Road cross over and turn right onto Astill Lodge Road and continue to the end.

[6]  Turn left onto Bennion Road and then after 40m left again into Astill Lodge Park.  Continue through the middle of the playground and take the path straight on to exit the park onto Lipton Road.

(A)  Astill Lodge Park is a fairly small park with  a range of equipment for children. There is a small pond and areas of wildlife habitats. The grasslands that make up the bulk of the area are home to wildflowers.  These encourage a wide range of insects which provide food for small mammals  which, in turn, are food for the larger mammals such as badgers, foxes and owls.  The park is managed  by local volunteers and there is a park user group that meets regularly -  phone 0116 222 1010 for details.

[7]  Continue along Lipton Road and, at the end, bear left onto Beaumont Lodge Road.

[8]  At the end go left along Astill Lodge Road to return to the centre, crossing at the pedestrian island.
