Description

[1] Turn right up Beech Hill Road and left into Broomfield Road passing St Mark's Church on the left.

(A) St Mark's Church. The original church was destroyed in 1940 during a bombing raid with only the spire being left intact. The new church was reopened in the 1963 to a design by the York architect George Pace. It has two striking stained glass windows, the Te Deum, over the high altar, designed by Harry Stammers and the west window, an abstract designed by John Piper. The church is usually open during the day.

The route continues along Broomfield Road to the traffic lights and crosses Newbould Lane. Continue up Glossop Road and turn left into Westbourne Road. Turn right by the old gas lamp at Westbourne School, left at the junction and left again down past Birkdale School.

[2] Turn right on the walkway signposted The Edge, through the pillars opposite and branch right past the front of The Edge to (B) the village green. Walk around the perimeter, picnic on the grass, follow the fitness trail or go straight on and turn right at the junction.

[3] Turn left at the old postbox and right on Fulwood Road. Pass (C) the Broomhill shops and fork half right at Rhythm & Booze into Beech Hill Road.

All walks are measured from the start point at the given hospital exit to the finish point at the given hospital entrance. Allow time to and from your workplace. The timings given are for continuous walking at a fairly fast pace and do not take into account individual fitness and stops for lunch, photos or sightseeing.
