Description

[1] Leave school by the rear entrance or equivalent, cross the road at the bollards and turn left. Turn right along the walkway after about 50 yards through Stovin Gardens. At the end turn left along the road signed as a cycle route to the Arena, which soon comes into view. Cross to the right-hand pavement, over the road and turn right onto the bridge, crossing both the canal and the railway beyond.

[2] Continue to the main road and follow this down the hill. Pause at the traffic lights to look at the Noose and Gibbet Inn (A).

The dummy wrapped in the flag of St George suspended in the cage represents Spence Broughton, a gentleman farmer from Lincoln, who hit on hard times after moving to Sheffield and ended up becoming a member of the Hatters Club, a notorious band of Attercliffe villains. He was caught, tried and hung in 1792 for the robbery of the Sheffield Mail. He remained on view in a cage called a gibbet for 27 years as a deterrent to other would be highwaymen. He was the last criminal to be treated this way in Yorkshire.

Turn left into the Arena car park at the lights, cross at the end and turn right. Bear left past the Arena reception entrance, cross the road and continue on the dual cycle and footpath. At the road turn right for a close-up view of the scary-looking aerial extreme high ropes adventure (B). Turn left into the park and cut across the centre of the flat Don Valley Bowl (C), which is suitable for a group activity. Head for the tram stop, pass through the gates, bear right then left to Coleridge Road.

[3] Turn left and follow this back to the start.
