Description

[1] Starting on Leicester Road, head up hill to turn left almost immediately into Main Street and then right into Upland Drive. Continue to just past Avery Drive on the left, where you will find a small path on the right. Follow this as it bends first left and then right to join another path which you take to the right, passing allotments before coming out onto Hill Lane at a car park.

(A)  On your left is Hill Hole Quarry, rarely visible - as you turn down Hill Lane there is a path in on your left which affords some view of it.

[2] Turn left along Hill Lane and half way down the hill, just past some buildings, look for a path to your right. Take this and cross a bridge over the M1. Take the path to your right just over the motorway. Follow the motorway for a short distance, cross a bridge on the left, go up to the top right of the next field, go through a small paddock then up the left edge of the next field  to come out on Cliffe Lane.  Turn right. At the end of Cliffe Lane there are services (B) which may be useful. But the route leaves the road just before them at a path on the left 100 metres beyond Lilac cottage, opposite the entrance to a paintball site.

[3] Follow this path as it skirts the quarry within a bank of trees. Continue ahead when it becomes a track and fork left through a gate to come out on Stanton Lane. Turn right along Stanton Lane for a few hundred metres and then turn left into Billa Barra Lane where you will see a car park on your right. Go through the car park and a circular path will take you round this interesting feature.

(C) The hill top of Billa Barra is ecologically interesting, with areas of acid grassland and an old conifer plantation.  The pools in the abandoned quarry support a variety of species, including a rare lichen, only found at one other site in Leicestershire.  The improved grassland on the slopes of the hill below the gorse scrub line are being planted with native broad-leaved trees which will be used as local provenance seed stock.

The hill top is a Regionally Important Geological site, with a natural outcrop of pre-Cambrian rocks (Markfieldite), similar to those found and much quarried the nearby Bardon Hill and Cliffe Hill

Retrace your steps back up Stanton Lane and take a footpath on the right waymarked as the Ivanhoe Way. This path crosses a bank then swings to the left to join a tarmac lane going ahead. At a left bend, cross a stile on the right and continue on a tarmac lane with the backs of houses to your left.

[4] At another left bend take the footpath to your right and soon turn left down another path to continue your journey in the direction you have been travelling, still along the backs of houses. When the houses swing left you come to a stile with a three way path junction beyond. Take the middle path, straight ahead, still waymarked as the Ivanhoe Way. Go over to a stile, down the left edge of the next field and ahead across another to reach a road. Take the path opposite and go up the field to a stile. The Ivanhoe Way now angles off to the right, but you go straight ahead along a grassy ride between young trees. Go through a gap in the far left hedge corner and continue ahead down another grassy ride. At the far end turn left along an enclosed path, pass a picnic table and go up to a road.

[5] Take the path opposite, go right 20 metres then left on a grassy ride following the wires over the brow of a hill. Cross a footbridge a little to the left of a picnic table and go straight ahead uphill. At the top take a gate on the right and follow the enclosed path to a road. Go left 30 metres and take a path on the right along the drive to Lame Duck Farm. After 100 metres cross a stile on the left. Turn left and follow the left edge of 2 fields to emerge on a school playing field. Go straight ahead and reach a track on the far side. Turn right for 20 metres then left into a wood. Follow the left edge to a hedge corner where you go straight on over a plank bridge and ahead to reach a gate into an open field. Keep straight ahead and descend to a bridge under the M1.

[6] Follow the track straight ahead beyond the motorway. Ignore any side paths and continue uphill to reach the Bulls Head pub. Turn right, pass the end of Main Street on the left and continue ahead along London road for a few hundred metres and take the next turning on the left, Chitterman Way. Follow this all the way to Leicester Road and turn left back to the start point.
