Description

[1] Cross the road in front of the Town Hall (Pinstone Street) with care, turn right and then left around the corner into Barker's Pool. Go straight on, crossing one street (Burgess Street) into the pedestrian area of Barker's Pool.

(A) Here you will find fountains, the City Hall (a concert venue) and the War Memorial. Barkers Pool was known as Balm Green until 1434. It was originally a collecting point for a number of natural springs, and later developed into a major area for industry and retail. By the middle of the 19th century it’s role changed as industry moved to larger premises and was replaced by more culturally orientated buildings (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/city-centre/public-spaces/barkers-pool-).

[2] Continue straight on through Barker’s Pool to the right hand pavement of Division Street ahead of you. Follow Division Street to the corner of Rockingham Lane (Costa Coffee on the corner).

Here you can detour into Rockingham Lane to look at the poetry on the wall. For more information - http://public-art.shu.ac.uk/sheffield/zep184.html

[3] Back on Division Street, pass the old Fire Station building on your right (now ‘Bungalows and Bears’ bar). Go straight on using the pelican crossing to cross Rockingham Street.

Here you can detour to your right to find another poem on the flat balconies.

[4] Back on Division Street, cross the road using the crossing. Turn right along the pavement to continue on Division Street towards Devonshire Green.

[5] On reaching Devonshire Green (B), continue on the footpath, straight on across the green. Go through the metal bollards at the end and carefully cross Fitzwilliam Street.

[6] Continue straight on along Broomhall Street, then on reaching a junction, go straight on, keeping the Springfield school building on your right and passing through a small garden area with a woodchip path. Continue ahead, then turn right at the end of the fenced playground area, then bear left to enter the small park, through a wooden totem pole archway.

[7] Cross the park, then on exiting, turn right up Gell Street. Follow this street until you reach West Street, then turn left.

[8] At the end of West Street, cross the road to the right using the crossing and then cross the ring road to your left, across the tram tracks, then the pedestrian crossing to the Harley Hotel. Take care crossing here to look out for trams!

[9] Keep the Harley Hotel on your left and go around the corner and up Hounsfield Road. Follow this road to the top, go up the steps and then turn left towards Sheffield University Students Union.

[10] Turn right to go through the underpass, then immediately left to ascend steps to the front of Firth Court. Continue straight on to enter Weston Park (C) (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/parks-woodlands--countryside/parks/a-z-city-district--local--parks/weston-park) after a short distance. Bear left along the park pathway to reach the entrance to Weston Park Museum.

[11] The walk finishes at Weston Park Museum.

Entrance to the museum is free of charge and there is also a cafe and toilet facilities http://www.museums-sheffield.org.uk/museums/weston-park/home.

Streets Full of Heroes

Look around the flats at the start of the walk for poems written by Benjamin Zephaniah during the Off the Shelf Festival of Writing: “Questions” on Rockingham Lane and “Heroes” on Rockingham Street.

"Wanderers and workers sinners and saints, from here they all look human.

We that are set in stone know their greatness; we mere words recognise their possibilities.

We can see that they are all romantics, freedom fighters and intellectuals.

These streets are full of heroes."
