[1] With your back to the YHA, walk down the path of the YHA property and then turn right on Welders Lane and walk to the intersection which is about 200m from the YHA. On your right you will pass the
(A) Quaker's Meeting House http://www.quakers-chilterns-area.org.uk/jordans_main.htm which is open from 2-5pm from March to October. The is the rest place of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania.
Turn right at the intersection and follow the road towards the village of Jordans. This can be a busy road so take care. Groups should walk single file. Turn left into Seer Green Lane (towards Jordans Village) passing the grassy village green where there are benches to sit and relax. There is a village store that sells coffee and refreshments. Continue on Seer Green Lane walking west. After the second crossroads the road suddenly descends steeply. At the bottom, where the road turns right (Wilton Lane), continue uphill on the path ahead. The path levels out and you reach a footpath Y junction in the vicinity of Manor Farm.
[2] At Y junction, take left-hand path for about 100m towards School Lane/Chalfont Rd, turn right on School Lane/Chalfont Rd and then left into Orchard Rd and follow this road until you pass the church on the right and the Three Horseshoes pub on the left.
Continue on Orchard Rd and take the 2nd footpath (a small alleyway) on the right (after Howard Rd) towards The Princess Marina Center and Rawlings Farm and follow this path crossing five stiles in the fields.
[3] At the end of the path, take a right onto the paved lane (there is a Chiltern Heritage Trail sign) and follow this narrow lane (single file walking due to cars) for a short distance to take a left footpath into Hodgemoor Woods. Stay on the left hand footpath as another path goes to the right. Just after the path crosses a small stream, there is a fork in the path where both forks ahead are indicated as public footpaths. Take the right fork here. The path can be muddy after rain! You are pretty much going due north now so ignore any paths to the left or right until you arrive at a parking lot. Just before reaching the parking lot you will come across a (B) Polish Soldiers Memorial Stone that states that many Polish Soldiers who fought in WWII lived in a camp on that site until 1962.
Leaving the parking lot, turn right onto Botterells Lane for about 100m and then left onto a farm lane for about 1.3km toward Upper Bottom House Farm.
[4] At Upper Bottom House farm, take footpath to the right (south) until you come to a Y junction. Take the left hand path towards Hill House Farm. At a junction take left again where a signpost indicates "London Road". Follow the Chiltern Way footpath towards Misbourne Farm. Stay on the (potentially muddy) path until just beyond the second of two black footpath gates where you reach a path junction with a wooden footpath marker post. Turn right and follow the South Bucks Way/Chiltern Way into Chalfont St Gilles.
(C) Chalfont St Giles is a lovely little village and worth a visit - visit the pub, deli or the church and enjoy a well-deserved lunch break.
[5] Cross the main road through Chalfont St Giles with care and take an arched entrance between shops. Immediately ahead the South Bucks Way continues alongside the cemetery of Chalfont Church; take a sharp right turn at the end of the cemetery to follow the path (do not cross the stream), then keep left on the path following South Bucks Way for almost 3km, crossing several fields without stiles but with kissing/steel gates. At a path junction before tennis courts, take the main left fork which shortly emerges onto a paved track.
[6] When you see the St Peter Community Centre, turn right passing a recycling center and the Chalfont AFC. Keep straight ahead on this footpath ignoring side and diagonal paths. The path continues all the way to Chalfont Leisure Center crossing 3 residential roads. Turn right to pass the entrance gate to the Leisure Center then immediately bear right and follow the alleyway along the leisure center/college fence to Grove Lane. Take a left on Grove Lane, staying on the pavement and follow road for about 150 m (passing Welders Lane on your right) before crossing over Grove Lane and taking footpath on right labeled Chiltern Heritage Trail/public footpath. Stay on this footpath, ignoring turns and entrances to fields. The footpath passes a small pond on the right. Continue until you come to a footpath junction clearly marked with footpath signs and small upright logs across the path.
[7] Turn right at the footpath junction and cross the open field, keeping in the same general direction until you come out onto Welders Lane. Turn left at Welders Lane and continue to hostel which is on your right side.
Alternative shorter walk: Walk from Jordans YHA [1] to Chalfont St Giles [5] and return from Chalfont St Giles to Seer Green [2] on the infrequent 580 bus (runs Mon - Sat). Check times beforehand at http://www.carouselbuses.co.uk. Bus stop is close to where the path emerges in Chalfont St Giles on south side of road. Bus will show destination as either Beaconsfield or High Wycombe - either is okay. Bus takes route via Deanway, Three Households, Newbarn Lane, Chalfont Road. Alight at School Road/Chalfont Road in Seer Green and walk route in reverse from [2] to hostel [1]. Take care walking on Jordans Lane.
