This walk has a number of busy roads, please take care when crossing these and use pedestrian crossings where possible
Some of the pavements and paths are uneven in places - take care.
[1] From the New Parks Library cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and turn left to walk along Aikman Avenue for about 1km to the traffic island.
[2] Turn right onto Letchworth Road and continue ahead about 800m to its junction with Glenfield Road.
[3] Go right past West Gate Lower School to the second pedestrian crossing. Cross over and go straight on into the park.
[4] Continue forward down the hill to the play area in front. (take care on the paths in the park as they are also used by cyclists)
(A) Western Park was part of the old Leicester Forest and was used for deer hunting by the nobility in the middle ages and as a source of firewood for the inhabitants of Leicester. The land was bought by Leicester Corporation in the late 19th century for use as a park. It is the largest park in Leicester at 72 hectares and has good facilities for all the major sports, a playground, plenty of paths and also boasts an Eco house with cafe and toilet facilities.
[5] From the play area take the roadway path into the park passing the bowling greens on the right. After a short distance turn left, follow the path up the hill and take the path to the right keeping the bandstand just to the right. Bear left to follow the path around and, at its end, turn right to regain the path that you came in on. Exit the park onto Glenfield Road.
[6] Cross Glenfield Road at the pedestrian crossing and turn left.
[7] Immediately after the college turn right onto Greencoat Road and continue forward along St Oswalds Road. At the end of St Oswalds Road cross Aikman Avenue at the pedestrian crossing to return to the library.
