Description

[1]  As you enter the main entrance of Beveridge Park, take the drive to the left of the facing house - called The Lion House. Provost Michael Beveridge, Provost of Kirkcaldy, bequeathed money for the purpose of providing this park.  The park opened in 1892. Follow this drive until exit gates are reached, after passing a car park on your left. Do not exit the park, but follow the drive around to the right until you see a park exit and zebra crossing on your left.   Exit the park, cross Zebra Crossing and into Balwerie Crescent (a dead end road). At end of this road, turn left.  Go through tunnel, under the railway line.  This tunnel was created when the railway was built, to ensure that clay workers had access from their homes in the town, to the pits on the west side of the railway. Exit the tunnel, turn right and cross the road at the Pelican Crossing.  After crossing road, turn right and follow road, passing a football ground on your right.

(A) Raith Rovers football club was founded in 1883. The more modern North and South Stands of the grounds were built in the 1990′s.

[2] As you go downhill, you will see Mill Street on your right.  Cross the road at the Pelican Crossing. After crossing at the  Pelican Crossing, return uphill and left into Mill Street. Follow Mill Street, under the viaduct until the tarmac road changes to an unsurfaced vehicle track.   As you approach a white house, take footpath on your right, up a slight incline. There is a small circular notice on a post at the side of this path, indicating that the path is part of www.fifedirect.org.uk/corepath  Follow this path until Kirkcaldy Golf Club House is reached.Kirkcaldy Golf Course was designed by the famous Tom Morris in 1904. Go through Golf Club car park until the exit is reached.  Turn left after going through the two pillars, either side of the road, at the exit.

[3]  After a short walk down this vehicle track, bear right on to a path, which has a  www.fifedirect.org.uk/corepath sign.As the path nears the river, follow the main path, up an incline and past a www.fifedirect.org.uk/corepath sign. (B) The ruins on the left of the path, as you go up an incline, are the remains of Mill Dam.  For various reasons, this was breached in 1989.

[4]  At this junction, take the path to the left of the wooden carving of a thistle.  Continue on this path until another junction is reached.

For the alternative route, take the path uphill to the right of the wooden thistle carving. This will make your walk around 2.5mls in total.  Follow the path until the main drive through Beveridge Park is reached. Turn left and follow this driveway to the start of the walk at the main entrance to Beveridge Park.

At this junction, take the path on the right, curving to the right uphill.  Follow path through woods until the B925 road is reached. This road can be busy at times.   Go straight across the road and turn right on path the other side. Follow path through the woods, with Raith Lake on your left. Raith Lake on your left is used for fly fishing for trout.  It is one of the few areas of water in Scotland named a lake. Pass wooden carvings of a bat and snail on your right, before crossing a wooden footpath over water.  Turn right and continue along path until an open grass area is reached.   Turn left onto tarmac path.  Turn right where the path meets a road. At the junction, at the end of Dronachy Road, turn left then cross the road, using the pedestrian, central reservation. Follow the path to your right, behind the wooden fence.

[5] Follow the main path, uphill, through these woods.  Two names found for the woods surrounding the path are: Long Braes Plantation & Sunnybrae Plantation. Ignore paths to the right and left of the main path. As you approach the end of the path through the woods, there is short incline to Bennochy Road.

[6] Cross road to Rabbit Braes, Community Park - a sign indicating this should be seen after crossing the road. Take the tarmac, pedestrian path downhill through the park. When the grassy area either side of the path ends, look to the right and take the path going uphill, into woods.  Follow the path through the woods, until a grassy area is reached. Go straight across the grassy area, up the short inclined path, which goes through a narrow strip of trees. When you exit the narrow strip of trees, bear left and follow the narrow path a short distance downhill before traversing the side of the hill. Continue following the path along the side of the hill and through a strip of shrubs & trees which cross the path.  The path will bear slightly to the left and go downhill.  Follow the path, turning right, uphill, just before houses are reached. Follow the path uphill to Bennochy Road.  Turn right on Bennochy Road and go uphill. Turn left into Hillcrest Avenue.  When Hillcrest Avenue turns right, go left into play park. Go diagonally across play park and out exit the other side. Follow path through the woods and through gap in a wall.

[7] Turn left after going through gap in wall and follow path alongside wall. Be aware of steep drops to your right, all along this path. At one point along the path it dips down and around to the right. Do not go down the gully to the right, but continue along the path, with the wall on your left. Continue along the path until there is an opening in the wall.  Go through the opening and turn right. Follow the path, crossing a grassy area to continue along the path, with the wall on your right. Continue along the path until Oriel Road is reached.  [Cross the road.  Go into the woods, on the right of the path with walls either side, and follow the path through the woods. You exit the woods as the path bears right past the corner of a brick wall into a car parking area. Go through the car parking area and turn left at the road (Raith Drive). At the end of Raith Drive, turn left.  Cross Boglily Road, to the main entrance of Beveridge Park, using the Pelican Crossing.
