Description

1 Climb the steps, cross the road and go straight on to the right of Hampden View Church. Climb up the grassy hill on your right to the level for the view and head past the fenced area containing seats to the wide tarmac path (Grammar Street). Pass through the bollards and turn left down Whitehouse Lane.

2 Continue round the corner into Fox Road and branch left at the barrier into Philadelphia Green Space. Branch right beyond the skateboard park and follow the path through the bollards, across the road to the drive opposite and turn right on the partly cobbled Daniel Hill Walk. At the end turn left up Daniel Hill Street, pass the Blake Hotel and after 50yds bear right across the grass into Ruskin Park. Cross a tarmac path and keep to the left edge. At the far end a path goes left a short distance to Burgoyne Road.

3 Ascend this and Hadfield Street beyond. Cross at the church and continue the remorseless climb. Hit the crossroads at a stagger and turn right to another crossroads. Go straight on up the cobbled Aldred Road and turn left on the short walkway at the very end into Bradley Street. Turn right to the junction with Northfield Road (bus stops) and the end of the mammoth climb.

4 Cross the zebra crossing into Northfield Avenue, at the end of which enter Bolehill Recreation Ground. Keep to the right and descend past the playground.

The view from the edge is outstanding, looking left along the Rivelin Valley with Stannington above, the Loxley Valley beyond and the Peak District moors beyond Damflask.

Follow the path to the right, with views over Walkley to Wharncliffe Woods, and descend a long flight of steps. Turn right at the junction below the BMX track and branch left downhill.

5 Cross the road opposite the barrier and descend the steps. Turn right, cross Rivelin Street and descend the cobbled Thrush Street. Continue down Fern Road and turn left down the steps just past number 61. Cross the road and enter the wood, bearing right at the bottom of the steps. Cross Rivelin Valley Road to the bridleway opposite and keep to the right beside the river.

Mousehole Forge is to your left. If the gates are open you are welcome to look round.

6 Turn right along Stannington Road (bus stops).

Across the road at the junction with Holme Lane you can see the restored undershot waterwheel of the grade II listed Malin Bridge Corn Mill, now converted into apartments. The mill was used to grind knives in the 18th Century, but was destroyed in the flood of 1864. It was rebuilt as a corn mill and operated until 1956.

Turn right along Holme Lane and again into Rivelin Valley Road.

From this bridge you can see the confluence of the Loxley and Rivelin.

Cross into the aptly named Watersmeet Road, which eventually has a wide grass verge overlooking the river. Turn right at the end and left along the walkway behind the garages. Continue along the road for 100yds and turn left on the walkway just beyond number 68. Turn left at the end of Limbrick Road past Hillsborough Weir and turn right and right again for Hillsborough Bus Interchange and the tram stop.
