Description

[1] This walk begins at Citizens' House in Consett.

Car parking is restricted in the immediate vicinity of Citizens' House and walkers are requested to avoid parking in the adjacent car parks for users of the medical centre and the church.  Plenty of free parking is available in nearby streets as well as the town centre car parks.

When facing Citizens' House take the combined cycle and footpath to the right side that passes along the edge of the medical centre car park.

The path here is wide and clear but do keep a look out for cyclists who share this space.

[2] At the end of this short path take the narrow pedestrian access path at the rear of the gardens of the houses to the south of Plane Street.  Turn left when Tyne Street is reached.  Walk up Tyne Street to the junction with Sherburn Terrace and turn right.

This area of Consett was laid down in the early 1900s.  Many of the streets are named after Prime Ministers who served under Queen Victoria such as Lord Salisbury, Gladstone, Lord Palmerston, and Lord Russell.  Hence the title of the walk!

[3] Head a short distance further down Sherburn Terrace before crossing and entering Salisbury Street.

Sherburn Terrace is a busy main road and there are no crossing points.  Take care when crossing.

Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, was Prime Minister three times: 1885-1886; 1886-1892; 1895-1902, serving for 13-years.  He was the first Prime Minister of the 20th Century.

[4] Gladstone Gardens is reached at the top of Salisbury Street.  Turn right and then almost immediately turn left and take the footpath cut through between the houses.

Turn left along the main footpath within Gladstone Gardens.  At the end bear right across the grass and take the footpath cut through between the houses in the corner to reach the rear lane of Gladstone Street.  Walk onto Gladstone Street.

Turn right along the main footpath within Gladstone Gardens and then turn left along Gladstone Gardens road until the junction with Park Avenue is reached.  Turn left and reach the junction with Gladstone Street.  Turn left into Gladstone Street.

[5] Cross Gladstone Street and then turn right into Cobden Street at the corner of Brockwell Court Care Home.

William Ewart Gladstone served as Prime Minister four times: 1868-1874; 1880-1885; 1886; 1892-1894.  More times than any other person.  At 84 he was the oldest ever serving Prime Minister when he resigned in 1894.

[6] Enter an area of newer housing development and take the second left into Southernwood.  The arched entrance into the development from Sherburn Terrace will be visible. Walk down Southernwood, through the arch and turn right into Sherburn Terrace.

Cross Sherburn Terrace at the lowered kerb directly opposite the pedestrian entrance to Hi-Q.

[7] Turn right along Sherburn Terrace passing in front of the Salvation Army hall and then turn left into the back lane behind the church.  Walk through the church car park, using the footpath, and onto Delves Lane.

[8] Turn left to return to Citizens' House.
