Description

This walk begins at Citizens' House in Consett.

Car parking is restricted in the immediate vicinity of Citizens' House and walkers are requested to avoid parking in the adjacent car parks for users of the medical centre and the church.  Plenty of free parking is available in nearby streets as well as the town centre car parks.

[1] Start the walk by crossing Delves Lane, the main road in front of Citizens' House, turn right and then turn left along Seymour Street.

[2] At the end of Seymour Street trun right and follow Taylor Street until Front Street is reached.  Cross Front Street using the pedestrian crossing and enter the pedestrianised zone of Consett town centre.

[3] After a short distance turn left into Nelson Street.  Walk to the side of the car park until Albert Road is reached.

[4] Cross Albert Road, turn left, and then turn right into Berry Edge Road.

[5] Walk the length of Berry Edge Road until Generation Place is reached.  Turn right through the fence and onto the footpath leading through the open ground to the rear of the houses.

[6] When a metalled footpath is reached take the second left downhill to reach Genesis Way.

[7] Cross Genesis Way, turn left and take the first right along a unnamed road onto the site of the former Consett steelworks.

Genesis Way is a busy road.  Use the crossing point where there is a mid-carriageway island.

[8] Cross the first road reached and take the prominent gravelled footpath directly in front of you.  Follow the footpath until the Derwent Walk is reached and turn left.

[9] Take the Derwent Walk until the A692 Consett Road is reached.  Cross the A692 and continue to follow the Derwent Walk until reaching Lydgetts Junction.

Take care at the A692.  This is a busy main road with no pedestrian crossing assistance.

[10] At Lydgetts Junction [A] turn left and take the coast to coast (CSC) path signposted to Consett and Leadgate.  Walk the C2C until the sculptures called Terra Novalis [B] are reached.

[11] Continue to follow the C2C path, signposted to Leadgate, crossing Knitsley Lane, until steel railings at the head of Gill Street are reached.

[12] Leave the C2C at this point and walk the length of Gill Street and take the pedestrian bridge over the A692.  Cross Delves Lane to take you back to Citizens' House.
