[1] This walk begins at Citizens' House in Consett.
When facing Citizens' House take the combined cycle and footpath to the right hand side that passes along the edge of the medical centre car park.
The path here is wide and clear but do keep a look out for cyclists who share this space.
[2] At the end of this short path turn right and cross the A692 using the pedestrian footbridge. Turn right and then left and pass to the side of the end of the terraced houses until the coast to coast (C2C) National Cycle Network route 7 is reached [A].
[3] Turn left and follow the C2C. At this point the path follows the left hand side of an extensive area of playing fields.
The playing fields are the site of a former extensive railway marshalling yard [B].
[4] Eventually the C2C reaches the roundabout junction of the A692 and A691. Cross the A692 using the crossing point with a mid-carriage island and continue along the C2C.
[5] The path is now on the track bed proper of the former Consett to Newcastle railway. The path passes below Leadgate Road and, passing Leadgate Cricket Club ground on the left hand side, passes behind the terrace housing facing onto Front Street.
[6] At a pedestrianised gap between the houses leave the C2C. Here there is a circular railing featuring scenes of former industry [D]. Cross Front Street and enter Sunderland Street which is almost directly opposite. Then turn right along the back lane behind the houses facing onto Front Street.
[7] Pass the Salvation Army hall on the left hand side until West Street is reached. Turn left and pass the Sure Start Childrens Nursery on the right hand side.
[8] On reaching Valley View cross over and take the footpath directly opposite.
[9] At the corner of the garden of the modern detached house turn right and take the path with allotments on the left hand side.
[10] When the Prospect Business Centre is reached turn left and take Crookhall Lane (a footpath) to the A692.
[11] Cross the A692 and continue following the footpath.
The A692 is a busy 3-lane highway. Take extra care when crossing.
[12] A junction of footpaths is reached opposite the entrance to a large, converted farm. Turn right and keep bearing right at each fork in the path.
[13] The path begins to climb and passes an entrance to the Thomas Swan chemical works and the entrance to the Cemex cement works on the right hand side.
[14] The C2C path is reached once again. Cross the C2C, go through the railing gate, and cross the road entrance to Thomas Swan to reach the A692. Cross the A692 using the mid-carriageway island and turn left.
[15] After a short distance a path is reached that forks uphill away from the A692. Take this path and pass into Crookhall Road.
[16] Turn left into Meadow Rise. Walk almost the full length Meadow Rise until a pedestrian access to Tyne Street is reached.
[17] Turn left and take the footpath to the rear of the back gardens of houses facing onto Plane Street.
[18] Take the footpath to the side of the medical centre car park to return to Citizens' House.
