Description

The Devonshire Quarter covers the area between West St and the Ring Road. To one side of Fitzwilliam Street is a residental area with lots of small and pleasant green spaces criss-crossed with walkways. On the other side of Fitzwilliam St there are fashionable shops and the large landscaped open space of Devonshire Green.

[1] From the main entrance of the Moorfoot Offices, go straight on along the Moor to Fitzwilliam Gate. Cross over and turn left to reach Charter Row. Cross this at the left hand of the two crossings from the paved area and enter Fitzwilliam Street ahead, walking on the left hand pavement.

[2] Take the first left into Milton St, then the first right into Thomas Street.

On your left are the Grade II listed is Eyewitness Works (A): Founded in 1852, they specialise in producing kitchen and pocket knives. The building is believed to be the only traditional works in Sheffield which still manufactures its original products. The name Eyewitness was chosen by the founder John Taylor and became the tradmark of his goods. It is said he chose it after being inspired by the line “No eye hath seen such” from Shakespeare's Henry 1V, Part 1.

At the end of Thomas Street, cross Egerton Street and enter the walkway / cycle track  ahead. This and other walkways are on this walk are shared with cyclists. Take care and be aware of them. Bear left at a path junction by house number 32. Stay on the track where it crosses a cul-de-sac and enter a small park with benches. Cross it to the far right hand side into another short walkway. At the end of this, turn right onto the road and follow round through a small residential parking area and exit this at the far left hand side opposite a small green space beside Springfield School with wildflowers and carved benches.

[3] Cross the road and turn left to walk along the woodchip path through the green space, then follow a wide pedestrianised avenue with another small green space on the left hand side. Keep straight on at the next junction to pass a public playground on your right, then turn right alongside this onto Gell Street and right again to enter the park by some wooden bollards and double back, following the railings, to the opposite entrance of the park.

A short detour to your right here will bring you to an attractive glass mosaic by "Art in the Park". (B)

Return to the park entrance, cross the road and walk along Bolton Street ahead towards a building with glazed purple bricks.

[4] On reaching this, cross over and turn left into Cavendish Street. After a hundred metres or so, you will see West One (C) precinct on your right. Enter and cross it to emerge opposite a car park. Cross over and continue ahead into Devonshire Street with the car park on your right.

[5] Do not take the footpath / cycleway on the right but enter Devonshire Green (D) by a wide entrance by some metal bollards and then bear left between some walled gardens (aim towards the BT building on the skyline).

The area has a central grassed area that is landscaped to create an amphitheatre area, which can be used for a variety of activities and events. This central area is bordered by grass terracing for seating and bordered by sculptural walls and planted beds.

On reaching Eldon Street, turn right and continue ahead, crossing Wellington Street near the Devonshire Cat pub and continuing straight on. At the end, cross over and turn right  then quickly left towards the rear of Atkinsons. At Charter Row dual carriageway, turn right to the crossing, cross left into Fitzwilliam Gate and retrace your steps right to Moorfoot Offices.
