Description

[1] Leave the New Dawn Community Centre and turn right onto Button Lane, crossing the road almost immediately. Carry on down Button Lane to the T junction with Moorcroft Road turn left, cross over the road straightaway to walk down Moorcroft Road on the right hand side. Look out for the tree stump on the grass verge with impressive fungi growing on it.

[2] Continue straight on to St. Michael’s and All Saints Church and at this T junction with Orton Road turn right. Cross the road at the dropped kerb with the Stop, Look, Listen sign, continue on, crossing Lawton Moor Road, past the letterbox and past the railings to the junction with Wythenshawe Road.

[3] Turn left along Wythenshawe Road under a shady avenue of trees with Wythenshawe Park’s Pitch and Putt on the other side of the road. There’s a few interesting houses to look at as you walk along. When you are opposite the entrance to the park, cross the road at the dropped kerb taking extreme care. This road is very busy and cars can be parked along it, there is no marked crossing point.

[4] Walk into the park taking the pedestrianised path on the right hand side alongside the Pitch and Putt. There are loads of squirrels in this area to spot. The walk goes along by the bowling greens where there are plenty of seats and a chance to watch a bowls match possibly.

[5] Continue on down the main path to the “Welcome to Wythenshawe Park” sign and map just by the tennis courts. Cross the driveway here and follow the signs to the Courtyard Tea Rooms and Wythenshawe Hall.

[6] Carry on down the broad path to a T junction and turn left to walk in front of the Hall.

(A) Wythenshawe Hall. The oldest part of the Hall dates from the time of Henry Vlll and was the home of the Tatton family until 1926 when it was bought by Lord and Lady Simon and given to the City of Manchester. The Hall is open Saturdays and Sundays from June – end of September, 11-5pm. Looking to the right, a statue of Oliver Cromwell stands on a rock pedestal, he used to stand near Manchester Cathedral.

[7] Keep on the path, watching out for cyclists, to leave the park by the black and white house onto Wythenshawe Road. Cross over Wythenshawe Road (beware, this is a very busy road) to walk on the left hand side straight up Rackhouse Road. Note the very tall conifers all leaning in the same direction. At the junction with Lawton Moor Road turn left, cross at the dropped kerb and walk on the right hand side of the road. Go past the sign to St. Aidan’s Catholic Primary School and cross Carloon Road at the marked dropped kerb to continue on down Lawton Moor Road going alongside the telegraph pole placed next to the path. Continue past the houses set back from the road having a glance at No. 90 with colourfully painted pots in a triangular shaped garden.

[8] Cross over Leycett Drive at the marked dropped kerb and walk on a few yards to Orton Road. Turn right here but cross over immediately at another marked kerb, carry on over Moorcroft Road, past St. Michael’s Church to Hillend Road, (Note the shrine to football in the garden of No. 3), turn left and carry on, emerging on Button Lane opposite the New Dawn Community Centre. Cross on the zebra crossing.
